History feels different when it is shared in the place it happened and that is the heart of Hobart Historic Tours.
Our daily walks invite you to pause for a moment, listen closely, and see the city not just as a backdrop to everyday life, but as a living archive of stories, choices, and characters who shaped Tasmania’s identity.

As you move through the streets, familiar spaces take on new meaning. A sandstone building becomes a testament to ambition and industry. A quiet courtyard reveals echoes of migration, conflict, or celebration. Even the most unassuming corners of the city hold layers of memory waiting to be uncovered.

Our guides don’t simply recite dates or facts. They open doors to the past with warmth, clarity, and a deep respect for the people who walked these paths before us. Each tour is an invitation to slow down and reconnect with Hobart’s heritage to understand how its history continues to influence the rhythm, culture, and character of the city today.

Whether you’re a visitor discovering Hobart for the first time or a local seeing your home through fresh eyes, our tours offer a chance to experience the city with renewed curiosity and appreciation. This is history made tangible, personal, and beautifully alive.

Trams - Sandy Bay Line

Trams were introduced along today's Sandy Bay Road in 1893.
Hobart's electric tramway system was the first in the Southern Hemisphere and its top-heavy looking double-decker trams were a noteworthy feature.

Up until this time, Sandy Bay had been a predominantly agricultural area with market gardens and dairy farms but the introduction of public transport soon led to its suburbanisation.

Hobart General Post Office

This handsome sandstone edifice was built between 1901 and 1904. Its Renaissance style was adapted to suit both the requirements of the site and the postal authorities.

The contract price was €32,930 and at the time it was the largest building contract ever executed in Tasmania.

The Mercury reported that it was the finest building in Hobart and would take a very high place with any buildings in Australia.
The Examiner thought the structure was extravagant and contained accommodation for five times the necessary number of staff. The €1,465 needed for the clock and chimes that were installed in the corner tower was paid for by public donations.

Storytelling reaches far beyond our oldest form of entertainment. It’s the thread that stitches together our memories, our origins, and the meaning we make of the world. Filled with heroes and villains, lovers and fools, these narratives have carved out our sense of identity.

Together with an extraordinary team, they delve into forgotten lore and long‑buried legends, bringing lost stories back into the light. And this year, Hobart Historic Tours celebrates 30 remarkable years of doing exactly that — sharing the city’s tales, championing its characters, and keeping its history alive for generations of curious wanderers.
