SEG Student Chapter at CODES, UTas The CODES SEG Student Chapter is a student branch of the Society of Economic Geologists at UTAS Welcome!

The CODES SEG Student Chapter at the University of Tasmania is a student branch of the Society of Economic Geologists, dedicated to pursing and disseminating geological knowledge amongst its members. In recent years the committee has organised seminars featuring internationally recognised specialists and taken its members to China (2011), South Africa (2012) and Russia (2013) to visit key geologic

al provinces. In addition to the seminars and trips, the SEG Student Chapter also organises numerous social and fundraising events in order to continue its efforts to advance geological understanding through the scientific investigation of mineral deposits and resources. In 2015, the committee intends to organise a trip to Iceland and ore deposits in Sweden. The trip will include an expedition to Iceland to explore the volcanic terrain with special focus on understanding volcanic facies and active hydrothermal systems.

Today, the Chapter visited the limonite quarry in the A*o caldera. This iron-rich layer covers the entire caldera and even trapped fossil leaves in the limonite. The stop was also a good opportunity to learn about cooperation between agriculture and mining.

CODES Student Chapter, in collaboration with the South Australian Society of Economic Geologists - SASEG, will be hosting a Geological Field Trip in South Australia in October 2023. All participant spots are now confirmed and finalised.

The SEG excursion will feature visits to BHP’s Olympic Dam Mine and Prominent Hill Mine, both of which are pertinent for understanding the IOCG mineral systems in the Gawler Craton region of South Australia. Subsequently, the site visit to Hillgrove Resources’ Kanmantoo Mine will focus on the Kanmantoo Cu-Au mineralisation, located 55 kilometres southeast of Adelaide.

We extend our profound gratitude to our industry sponsors, partners, professional societies and experts whose generous support and contributions have made this geological field trip possible.

Additionally, we’ve organised a visit to Fleet Space Technologies with a technical talk on Ambient Noise Tomography (ANT), ExoSphere Technology and a networking breakfast. The SEG chapters will then host a Geoscience and Technology Symposium with highlights including presentations on IOCG mineralisations at Gawler Craton and the Copper potential of South Australia, and an enhanced experience with AR/VR technology for the IOCG drill core viewing session with experts, and more to be announced. The AIG Geopub event will feature four PhD students from CODES presenting their research projects. Our event series will conclude with the SEG Networking Evening, inviting students and professionals across all sectors.

Please be advised the capacity for most of these events is limited. Invitations will be extended to selected registrants only.
