Many people are expected to head up to Kunanyi/Mt Wellington again this long weekend.

🌧️ The Disappearing Tarn only appears after heavy, sustained rainfall. If you decide to take a look yourself, please stay safe on the mountain.

πŸ…ΏοΈ High interest in the Tarn can cause traffic congestion, with limited parking at The Springs. Please follow all parking signs and markings to allow access for others.

If you're heading up the mountain, we recommend:

πŸš— Carpooling
πŸ•– Going early in the day avoids peak times
πŸ₯Ύ Walk from the Fern Tree public bus stop (adds an extra 45-minute walk each way).
🚌 Catch the kunanyi/Mt Wellington Explorer Bus to The Springs.

The Milles Track leading to the tarn is long, difficult, rocky, and very muddy. From Milles Track to the tarn is unmarked and very difficult.

❄️ Stay safe – it's cold, so take warm πŸ§₯ and waterproof clothing.
⏰ Allow enough time to get back before dark πŸŒ™ – it takes 3–4 hours return.
πŸ₯Ύ Stay on the narrow track (single file please to minimise impacts on our beautiful mountain).
πŸ’§ Drinking water catchment regulations apply 🚫

Yes, the Disappearing Tarn is back. Yes, it's going to be popular. PLEASE PLAN YOUR VISIT.
* Parking at The Springs is limited and carpark turnover will be slow whilst people complete the 4 hr return walk. Consider walking from the Metro Bus stop at Fern Tree (adds 45 mins to your walk each way), take the kunanyi/Mt Wellington Explorer Bus from the Hobart waterfront, car pool or ride to The Springs.
* It is a 2 hr walk EACH WAY to the Tarn from The Springs, so a 4 hour return trip.
*The Milles/Wellington Falls Track is graded difficult, because it is long, steep, slippery, extremely muddy, extremely rocky and uneven under foot.
*It is wet and narrow in places - expect to wait and give way to other walkers. Do not leave the formed track.
*Start at the Upper Springs (the old hotel site), climb the old stone steps and turn left at the top on Grays Fire Trail to get to the start of the Milles Track.
* Allow plenty of daylight.
* You will need good walking shoes, warm and waterproof clothing, food and water, and a fully charged phone.
* NO SWIMMING - it's a protected Drinking Water Catchment
* Respect each other, respect the track, respect the Park.
*Report issues like dogs and swimmers immediately to the Rangers. Ben 0408 517 534
Kaely 0439 336 327.

πŸ”₯ Fuel Reduction Burn: Brushy Hill, Wellington Park πŸ”₯

We plan to complete our fuel reduction burn at Brushy Hill in Wellington Park tomorrow, Wednesday 13 May 2026.

Access in and out of Wellington Park from Lenah Valley Road will remain open to the public.

The burn will take up to three days to complete and will be visible from Lenah Valley and surrounding areas. We will make every effort to minimise smoke impacts.

πŸ—ΊοΈ The map shows the planned burn site, which may be closed for a number of days.

🚫 Please keep clear of the burn site to help us keep everyone safe.

β›… If the weather on the day is unsuitable, the burn will be postponed to a future date.

The City of Hobart’s fuel reduction burn program is part of our ongoing efforts to reduce the risk of destructive bushfire and to help protect Hobart’s community, visitors and the natural environment.
