🚙🌸 Explore the Ravensthorpe Range 4WD Trail

If you’re visiting the Fitzgerald Coast, make time for one of Ravensthorpe’s great inland adventures — a 4WD journey through the Ravensthorpe Range.

Rising around the town and extending for roughly 45 kilometres, the Range combines rugged bushland, sweeping views, extraordinary botanical diversity and remnants of Ravensthorpe’s early mining history. The upper Range tracks are 4WD only, while Archer Drive provides access towards one of the best-known lookouts.

The drive is especially spectacular during wildflower season. As you climb Archer Drive and travel through the Range, keep watch for Nodding Banksias, Beaufortias, brilliant blue Lechenaultias, Bottlebrushes, delicate Verticordias and the beautiful Qualup Bell. Further along, visitors may encounter Cockies Tongues (Templetonia retusa), red pea flowers, Pincushion Hakeas, Banksias, Blue Mallees, Rock Oaks, Tea Trees and more Bottlebrushes. What is flowering changes with rainfall, location and the time of year, which means every trip can look a little different.

🌸 And that's only the beginning. The Fitzgerald Biosphere Coast supports around 2,500 plant species, including many found nowhere else. Wildflowers occur throughout the year, but spring is the peak time for variety, particularly for the region's orchids and smaller flowering plants.

There is plenty to see even when you aren't looking down at the flowers. Stop at Archer Drive Lookout for views across Ravensthorpe, surrounding farmland and distant ranges. The landscape also tells the story of the district's mining past, with historic mine areas scattered through a Range where gold and copper mining dates back to the late 1800s.

And keep your eyes on the bush as you travel — kangaroos, emus and malleefowl can all be encountered in the Range.

🌼 Make a day of it

Start at the Ravensthorpe Visitor Centre & Museum and pick up the detailed Ravensthorpe Range 4WD trail information before heading out. Pack water, lunch and the camera, take your time and stop often — some of the smallest wildflowers can be the most spectacular.

Please stay on formed tracks, avoid driving through vegetation, don't pick wildflowers and take particular care after rain. Current Fitzgerald Coast information recommends obtaining the trail brochure and directions from the Visitor Centre before undertaking the Range Top 4WD route.
