It’s officially the longest night of the year in the southern hemisphere tonight, with June 21 marking our winter solstice. Darkness will fall in Sydney at 4:53pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time), compared with around 8pm during daylight saving time (October - April). Bring on the longer days!

Sydney's majestic St Mary's Cathedral in the afternoon light. Located opposite Hyde Park, it stands on the site of the first Catholic Church in Australia. The cathedral, with its grand Gothic Revival style inspired by the great medieval cathedrals of Europe, was rebuilt after a fire in 1865. Free guided tours take place every Sunday at 2pm. This rockstar appears to be strumming on an air guitar as it frolics in the waters off Sydney. It’s one of over 40,000 whales that will travel north along the New South Wales coast (known as the Humpback Highway) during the May-November migration season.
