🌊🐋 A Whaley Wonderful Day! 🐬✨

After all the rain, the sun lit up Jervis Bay and we were greeted by whales cruising between Bowen Island and Point Perpendicular, with playful dolphins along for the ride! 💙

Our passengers loved tucking into ham, cheese & tomato croissants from Fishermens Wharf Café and hot, luscious pasta from Pasta Buoy—all enjoyed with a cold Jervis Bay Brewing Co. beer from our fully stocked bar 🍺🥐🍝

We’ve had a week of true winter variety – sunshine, sea fog, rainbows… and of course, our favourite visitors, the whales and dolphins! 🐋🐬

Some cruises have been quieter for whale action, but being out on the ocean is always magical. 🌊✨

🌊 Today is Whale Census Day! 🐋

The whales are certainly letting us know this year that their population is booming! We’ve already seen an incredible number of whales this season — and there’s no sign of it slowing down. Since the moratorium on commercial whaling was introduced in the 1980s, caseing the hunting of whales in Australian waters and worldwide, the east coast humpback population has been growing by about 10% every year. Today, citizen scientists are out along headlands all over the east coast, counting every whale they see as part of Whale Census Day — the key way we gather data on these gentle giants.

Thanks to the currents, the whale migration has been hugging the cliffs, with what feels like a conveyor belt of whales passing within metres of point perpendicular!

From what we’ve seen on the boats today, it looks like this year could break records once again! If you’d like to be part of this incredible event next year, visit the ORRCA website for details on how you can get involved.

Our current estimate puts the east coast humpback population at up to 40,000 whales — and still rising! 🐳

The comeback of humpback whales is one of the world’s greatest wildlife protection stories. As we celebrate their return, please be mindful of your impact on our oceans. If you’re out on the water this whale season, remember to keep safe distances from our whales to keep these whales safe — it’s their ocean, after all. 💙
