This is some of the most rewarding and meaningful work we do at ACWA. We are very happy to support the Great Southern Reef Foundation as we place a very high value on the fantastic work they do.

We will continue to develop our marine education programs. We hope to reach many more teachers and school students into the future. This kind of experience based learning is just one small piece of the puzzle when it comes to looking after the Great Southern Reef. We take great pride attempting to create a brighter future for the marine environment 🤿🐬🍃🥾

Over the next few months, we anticipate a period of less frequent tours. Yet we remain very keen to continue facilitating 5-star snorkelling experiences in Jervis Bay. As visitor numbers ease, we believe it is a good time to provide opportunities for locals to explore the fascinating underwater world. A world-class marine environment full of biodiversity, beauty and wonder, sits right on our doorstep. We have a range of new equipment including 60 brand new 4/3mm wetsuits and 3mm hoods/vests, that we don't want sitting idle.

For this reason, we are offering heavily discounted mid-week sessions for interested small businesses (and associates), accommodation providers and community groups. Our aim is to introduce ourselves and our offerings in the best way we know how—by taking you snorkelling—while also providing an opportunity to enjoy the local marine environment.

We are excited to offer Shoalhaven businesses, accommodation providers and community organisations the opportunity to explore the underwater wonders of Jervis Bay with ACWA. Heavily discounted mid-week sessions will be available between May and September. Learn more by reading this article.

Here is a brief insight into the day in a life at ACWA. From Wobbegongs to site selection and everything in between. The range of topics is endless so we have limited ourselves to 5 subjects at a time. We will continue to 'take 5' here. Feel free to pass onto anyone with in interest in the marine environment.

At ACWA finding content isn’t difficult. We work in one of the most exciting and dynamic offices in the world, the ocean. Rather, it is difficult to find the time to do something with it. For this reason we have selected 5 recent images and attached brief descriptions. The aim is too share our kno

We all carry around a bit of baggage (some more than others). However, I think this Decorator Crab will have most people covered.

Essentially carrying a micro-ecosystem on its back, this decorator crab has chosen barnacles and sea anemones for it disguise and perhaps amour. It looks like bulbasaur for all of those Pokémon fans out there.

I’m sure the barnacles and sea anemones which are normally stationary filter feeders are enjoying the benefits of being attached to a moving critter.

This is what is known as a symbiotic relationship. These relationships occur when the life habits or behaviours of two or more creatures interact in a way that is mutually beneficial.

In this case, the decorator crab benefits from the camouflage and amour provided by its various hitchhikers. While the barnacles and sea anemones benefit by being given the ability to move and access more food within the water column.

For those of you who responded with 'squid eggs' to our previous story, you are correct!

These are in fact the eggs of a Southern Calamari, Sepioteuthis australis. Interestingly, we have recently seen both adults and juveniles of the species in the area this egg mass was photographed

Squid such as Southern Calamari are fast growing and short lived. They are voracious feeders and efficient predators that are mostly active at night. Using jet propulsion and advanced eye sight, squid are able to capture the most nimble of prey such as shrimp and small fish. Additionally, squid like other cephalopods (octopus and cuttlefish) have specialised cells called chromatophores that allow their skin to change colour to blend in with the surrounding environment. This allows the squid to hide from predators and ambush potential prey. Chromatophores are also used in squid courtship behaviours whereby changes in colour signal willingness and conversely unwillingness to mate to potential partners.

Once two squid agree to mate they give a new meaning to the term 'quickie'. The male passes over a s***m package to a female, the whole process taking 2 seconds. Once fertilised the female will attach her eggs to substrates such as seagrasses and kelp. Or as I have noticed during 2.5 years growing Blue Mussels ropes and floats as well. The eggs start off as straight cylinders and develop into what looks like a string of pearls. Each pearl or bead contains a developing embryo which will hatch after an incubation period of roughly 3 weeks. The egg casings are said to be poisonous to fish therefore protecting the unborn squid from predation. Once born the juvenile squid are a couple of centimeters long. Although at this stage their swimming abilities are limited, they still possess the ability to change colour using their chromatophores.

Squid are semelparous meaning they only breed once during their lifetime. Southern Calamari typically have a lifespan of 12 to 18 months.
