It’s that time of year again 💪

This one went spilled over the end of the brag mat but we got a fix at 1.38m. Great work by the whole crew on a day of solid fish!

A long period between posts! With Easter upon us, our team would like to wish you all a great long weekend! Hopefully your all getting a chance to hit the water and may your lines be as tight as ours have been lately 🎣 A crew from last week took home a beautiful bag of flathead and whiting, we love our big fish but these bread and butter species are something that is close to the heart for many of us!

Making our way through to the end of the notorious “Blowvember” and we tell you what… this year has been no exception! Plenty of challenging days from rain, thunder and lightning to 30 knot plus winds at times. However, it didn’t stop us finding those windows of magic to put people onto fish! We finished off the month with one of our return crews that tangled with multiple jig eating Samsons and kingfish to sign off what was a truly epic day on the water 🙌

A long post today following some quiet times for us on media over the last few months. Nevertheless, we would like to keep all our customers and loyal supporters informed with how some of the recent events in South Australia have affected us.

Some serious challenges for our industry have put unprecedented pressure on our operations since the beginning of the Algal bloom in March this year. The Bloom has devastated fragile parts of our marine ecosystem and there has been a lot of uncertainty around exactly what level certain species have been affected. We can say with confidence that the offshore waters we access have been mostly unaffected however inshore has undoubtedly suffered a different fate. We have been adapting and tailoring our charters as much as possible to avoid affected areas and still maintain our approach to sustainability fish our waters.

The abundance of snapper has proven to be a significant problem and trying to avoid bycatch of this species during their closure has been a skill in itself. Each year this is becoming more difficult and there is a clear gap between what science is showing and tangible evidence in the field. This has been a consistent observation throughout the entire fishing community. This, combined with the changes to fishing regulations that were announced this week will no doubt put one of our most valuable offshore species at serious risk…Nannygai (Bight redfish) are a staple species for our southern waters and their numbers have been undeniably declining in our waters due to overfishing. With the continuation of the snapper closure and the recent bag limit cuts to other species in the Spencer gulf zone they are now more vulnerable than ever. Something will need to change for the longevity of this species. We will be advocating for changes around snapper access with the aim to better balance fishing pressure and in the meantime will do our part to ensure our impact on the species is managed the best way possible.

The restrictions that have been rolled out this week by the Premier have come abruptly and it has left our industry with little time to adapt and respond. We support decisions made to protect our oceans and promote fish abundance however these need to be based on more than just the science we have available. In addition to this, the inconsistency of these sustainability focused restrictions are confusing with the Spencer Gulf remaining open to commercial fishing including prawn trawling.

What does all of this mean for Reef Encounters? The coming weeks will determine our future as we iron out the details of the new restrictions. In the meantime we will continue to operate in offshore waters isolated to locations where algal bloom impact has been minimal and where we believe we can continue to fish sustainably. So far, we have seen steady catches of Nannygai, swallowtail, Shark, Trevally, Blue Morwong, whiting and the odd Samson fish. All have been in great condition which is a good sign after some fears around the bloom. We also are in hope that the season ahead brings good numbers of southern bluefin tuna to diversify our catch and keep us all busy through the warmer months! We will be sure to let you all know when they make their return 🙌

So to all of you we ask for your continued support and patience with us through these challenging times. If you’re thinking about that next fishing trip don’t hesitate to give us a call and the team at Reef Encounters will be here to keep bringing your fishing dreams to life !
