Cave confusion.

Is it Drovers Cave or is it Stockyard Gully Cave?

If you rely on Mrs Google to track your way either to the Drovers Cave National Park or to Stockyard Gully Reserve, you are likely to become “geographically embarrassed” or at the very least confused!

These are two separate cave systems, miles apart, and with different access parameters.

Numerous websites either mix up the locations and names or refer to each incorrectly (including their images)

# Drovers Cave National Park is close to Jurien Bay with access off Indian Ocean Drive or Jurien East Road.

The Drover`s Cave is closed and inaccessible. Hasting`s Cave is guarded by large aggressive European bee colonies and Morba Cave is at the end of a long rocky track that will pinstripe your car for most of the way.

Tracks in the National Park are deep soft sand. You will need to reduce tyre pressures if you want to keep mobile or to limit the need to become close friends with your Max Tracks and shovel.

# Stockyard Gully Reserve and its caves are more user friendly.
Access is via Cockleshell Gully Road (north from the Coorow Green Head Road) east of Green Head. The last 5 kilometres being 4X4 (not suited to low SUV`s)

The off-road track is sandy and rocky but not to the extent of the Drovers Cave Park. It is still advisable to lower tyre pressures to ease damage to the track.

You will need torches to explore the cave (tunnel)

Sandy Cape stuff.

The camping sites at the Sandy Cape Recreation Park are divided into three sections.

For ALL bookings go to https://www.spacetoco.com/org/shire-of-dandaragan/stay

Please make your booking prior to arrival.

Please note that there are NO powered sites at Sandy Cape.

The Sandy Cape main campground is accessible to all vehicles, caravans and motor homes (2WD).

There are 112 sites. Each site is numbered, and you can choose your own when you book (there is a site map on the booking page)

The site that you book is the one allocated to you. Please do not set up at any site other than the one you have chosen and booked.
The booking page displays a photograph of each site with text giving dimensions and what the site is most suited for.

You can change sites, but your changes need to go through the “dashboard” of the booking system (or call us) before you set up camp in another location (that site may not be available)

Just because a site seems vacant to you, it does not mean that it has not been booked. It may be that the occupants are out exploring, might be in town, or could be planning a late arrival.

4X4 sites
The Sandy Cape North Bush 4X4 and the Sandy Cape South Bush 4X4 areas are separated from the main campground but also need to be booked.

Please note that these sites are 4-WHEEL DRIVE ACCESS ONLY, and you will be required to bring with you (and use) a portable toilet.
Whilst some campers tow large caravans into these sites, the tracks, rough terrain and sometimes narrow pathways may not be suitable for some.

If you are unsure about taking your treasured house on wheels into these areas, please give us a call and we can explain current track conditions to you.

Feel free to give us a call 96552 0870 (during office hours 9 to 4) if you need help with information or bookings.

Apparently, you can’t fix stupid!

There are still people out there who firmly believe that nature-based campsites like Sandy Cape are there for their personal party zone antics into the wee hours of the morning.

Similarly, there are dog owners out there who think it is funny to have their own pooches roaming freely, cocking their leg on other camper’s tent flaps, seeking intimate relations with another campers’ cute poodle, pinching food of plates or leaving doggy doings uncollected.

More of the Stupid brigade think that road rules do not apply in campsites or that they can ablute behind their campsite rather than use the public toilets.

We would all like to think that commonsense would tell most of us that none of the above is acceptable in nature-based campgrounds, but when you have a IQ score less than 10 this will not compute, and you will remain stupid.

Dog Tales.

Most of us love having our fur shedding friends along with us on holiday.

Our canine companions come with their own set of rules which are simple.

If you are strolling around town, in a caravan park, out at Sandy Cape or Milligan’s Island campgrounds, all that we ask is to keep Fido on a lead, clean up any “land mines” left behind and discourage your pooch from stealing sausages off someone else’s BBQ.

For off lead fun, hole digging or beach frolicking we have plenty of space in Cervantes or Jurien Bay on dedicated “off leash” beach areas.

If you are choosing to Visit our National Parks and need a dog sitter for a few hours or the day, call Tams Animal Day Care on 0419 942 969 where it is likely that pooch will be inside, sitting on Tam’s lap, and watching Netflix re-runs of Lassie on the big screen.

For a less glamorous offering, DBCA in Cervantes offer free kennels at their depot in Bradley Loop (office hours only).

Oh, what a difference!

If you are new to the off-roading 4X4 scene, this might be useful for you.

You will have heard about lowing your tyre pressures to make sandy beach or track driving easier, but the image here will show how much difference it makes to your tyre footprint and why “airing down” is your friend.

That added footprint, spread over 4 tyres, makes a huge difference and is particularly useful if you use it before hitting the soft stuff.

Successfully tackling tough terrain with high tyre pressure does not mean you are a skilled driver, it simply chews up the tracks and makes it hard for anyone following those tracks after you.

It also adds fuel to the fire that can result in track or access closures.

Air down and we will all be happy!

Thanks to Anthony and Matilda for the image.

How do I get to Hangover Bay?

Try starting at Thirsty Point lookout in Cervantes.

Then head towards Nambung National Park to get properly Pinnacled, then wind your way towards the Coast for a recovery stint at Hangover Bay.

Have a snorkel, lay on the beach for a sunbathe or take advantage of the gas BBQ`s for a picnic afternoon.

If you are lucky you may get the chance for a bit of interaction with a visiting Sea Lion or two.

Bogged, Parked or Stuck.

We have had a recent spike in calls from people who have found themselves in one of the above situations after their 4X4 adventure became challenging.

The Hill River area between Jurien Bay and Cervantes and the Drovers Cave National Park near Jurien Bay are places for the unprepared or inexperienced to learn valuable lessons the hard way.

If you find yourself venturing into the unknown to explore with your 4X4, it is worthwhile engaging your front axle BEFORE you find the going tough.

It is also worthwhile lowering your tyre pressures BEFORE you get that sinking feeling.

Pack your recovery gear and know how to use it. loading your tyre pump, tracks and shovel BEFORE you go on an adventure is smart. It is not much help to you if it is still in the garage.

If you don’t have the experience to recover your bogged machine, join a 4x4 club and share the integrated experience of other members.

We are happy to pass on the contact details of a recovery service if you need one, but we would also be happy if your actions did not degrade our tracks and cause grief for those following in your tyre tracks and deep bog holes.

Friday`s fun fact.

Families of Emu are often wandering the famous Pinnacles of the Nambung National Park.

Even though they are flightless birds, emus still have wings.
They use them to cool themselves down by stretching them out and allowing air to move around their body.

They also use the tiny wings when they’re running at top speed to steer themselves in the right direction.
