Beef with a Backstory: Kangaroo Valley Fire Feast Showcases Ethical Meat from Retired Dairy Cows
Once home to over 90 dairies, Kangaroo Valley has a rich agricultural legacy. This weekend, that story gets a fresh chapter. At Wildwood Kangaroo Valleys Fire Long Lunch on August 2nd and 3rd, local farmer Greg Mumm of RRosewood Farm Kangaroo Valleyis bringing new life — and purpose — to the Valley’s dairy roots by turning retired dairy cows into ethical, pasture-raised beef.
In a nod to the region’s dairy history, Greg’s approach breathes new life into old practices. Rosewood Farm raises and finishes the dairy cattle on chemical-free pastures, creating meat with incredible depth of flavour — and a lighter environmental footprint.
“At Rosewood Farm, we believe in giving back more than we take,” says Greg. “Our cows begin as milk producers and finish their lives regeneratively — nourishing both people and the land.”
Led by QLD’s Terra Firma chefs, the fire long lunch will showcase the robust flavour and complexity of Rosewood’s retired dairy beef, cooked entirely over open flame at Wildwood’s 100 acre Kangaroo Valley bush retreat.
Children aged 6+ can join the Bush Kids Club, hosted by Drew Longbottom, traditional custodian of the land. The experience includes ochre painting, bush tucker walks, dance, and a fire-cooked lunch — offering young guests their own magical connection to Country.
“We are thrilled to host the Fire Long Lunch event and showcase the incredible local produce that Kangaroo Valley has to offer,” Wildwood Kangaroo Valley owner Alex Herlihy says. “Our aim is to create an unforgettable dining experience that celebrates the community and the region’s unique culinary identity.”
The Terra Firma Long Lunch events will begin at 12pm and conclude at 4.30pm on Saturday, 2 August, and Sunday, 3 August. Tickets are limited and bookings are essential, tickets available here from
