Give Whales Space – Safe Whale Watching in the Dampier Archipelago

We’ve been lucky enough to have had some amazing humpback whale encounters in the Dampier Archipelago recently. Seeing these incredible animals in their natural environment and sharing the experience with our guests is pretty special.

Fortunately, most boaties do the right thing and give whales the space and respect they deserve.

However, we’ve also been saddened to see some boaters doing the wrong thing - including a boat travelling at speed directly towards a whale and calf resting on the surface, stopping extremely close to them, having a look, then speeding away.

While it might seem exciting to get close, this can disturb, stress and potentially put whales and calves at risk.

🐋 Keep Your Distance

Stay at least 100m from the side of a whale and 300m from its front or rear.

Slow down and keep an appropriate distance.
Never chase, cut off or block a whale’s path.
Give whales space to move naturally.
If a whale changes direction or behaviour because of your boat, you’re too close.

The best whale encounter is one where the whale doesn’t even know you’re there.

Let’s enjoy these amazing humpbacks while giving them the space and respect they deserve.

Enjoy the encounter, but let the whale decide the distance.

What a day in the Dampier Archipelago!

Our 14 August Snorkelling & Sightseeing Tour was one to remember!

Our guests were treated to multiple humpback whale sightings as we cruised the beautiful Dampier Archipelago and they even popped up at our snorkel spot.

The snorkelling was a highlight, with reef sharks, plenty of colourful fish and a curious turtle making an appearance as our guests explored the incredible marine life beneath the surface.

Whales, turtles, turquoise water, snorkelling and a remote island beach - it doesn’t get much better than that!

PADI Open Water Dive Course - Learn to Dive in 3 days
15, 29 & 30 August 2026

The PADI Open Water Diver course is your first step towards becoming a certified scuba diver.

Learn to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment with an experienced instructor. You’ll develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to dive safely at home or abroad, to a maximum depth of 18m for adults or 12m for junior divers.

More than just a certification, the course is an opportunity to discover the underwater world and become a responsible ambassador for our oceans.

Set course dates are 15, 29 & 30 August 2026.
(subject to weather conditions and T&C)

Day 1: confined water (pool) 15/08/26
Day 2: open water (shore) dives 1 & 2 29/08/26
Day 3: open water (boat) dives 3 & 4 30/08/26

Course cost is $895.
Price includes PADI fees, eLearning, training, dive gear throughout the course, Digital Certification Card, 2 shore dives and 2 boat dives in the Dampier Archipelago.

What a fantastic Twilight & Night Dive!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday evening for the Twilight & Night Dive in the Dampier Archipelago and made it such an awesome evening. It was great to share the underwater world with such a fun group of divers!

A special thank you to Holly for capturing some of the incredible creatures that we saw and helping to preserve the memories from a truly magical night beneath the surface.

While the daytime winds have been hanging around lately, the conditions completely transformed after sunset. We enjoyed calm seas, amazing visibility and a beautiful cruise back to the harbour under the moonlight. A world away from the strong winds during the day.

It's nights like these that remind us why we love diving the Pilbara. We can't wait to do it all again!

A Day to Remember 💙

Recently, we had the privilege of hosting a very special private charter for a local family as they celebrated their Nan's life and honoured her lifelong love of the ocean.

Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of the Dampier Archipelago, they scattered her ashes into the crystal-clear turquoise waters she would have loved.

Throughout the tour, the ocean seemed to honour the occasion with an unforgettable display of wildlife. Dolphins played alongside the boat, humpback whales surfaced nearby, two majestic manta rays made an appearance - one delighting everyone by leaping clear out of the water several times and two dugongs made a rare appearance. It truly felt as though the marine life had come together to guide Nan on her final journey home.

It was a day filled with love, memories, laughter and tears. A reminder of the deep connection so many of us share with the sea.

Thank you to the family for allowing Pilbara Dive and Tours to be part of such a meaningful farewell. It was an honour to help create a peaceful and memorable tribute in one of the most beautiful places in the Pilbara.

What a week on the water!
