The little pink flower that turned a burnt landscape into something beautiful.

After the devastating 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires, something extraordinary happened in the Blue Mountains.

In 2021, the rare Pink Flannel Flower (Actinotus forsythii) appeared in spectacular numbers carpeting parts of the fire-affected landscape in delicate shades of pink. 🩷🩷🩷

These tiny wildflowers seeds can spend years hidden beneath the soil, waiting for the right combination of fire, rain and sunlight to trigger them into life.

And 2021 was their moment.

Meet the Wonga Wonga Vine and no, it’s not a w**d!

You might spot this beautiful native climber winding its way through the Blue Mountains and mistake it for an invasive vine, but Wonga Wonga Vine (Pandorea pandorana) is actually an Australian native. 🇦🇺

Its delicate tubular flowers can appear from winter through spring.

It’s a woody climber that naturally scrambles through forests and gullies, sometimes reaching several metres high.

And after flowering it produces long seed capsules containing papery, winged seeds designed to catch the wind.

We captured these around the Leura Cascades area. 😍
