🌊 Nope, not the Whitsundays… welcome to Minnamurra.

That lush green rise offshore? That’s Rangoon Island (aka Stack Island), standing at the mouth of the mighty Minnamurra River – the Illawarra’s largest river system and the natural border between us and our mates next door in Shellharbour.

'Minnamurra' means “river of many fish” in Dharawal language, and the area has been a rich food source and cultural site for thousands of years, and a collection point for ochre for ceremonial use.

As for the island’s name, it comes from the Rangoon, a 19th-century steamer that ran aground nearby in 1870. Parts of its wreck can still be spotted in the shallows if you know where (and when) to look.

These days, the Minnamurra River is made for paddling, picnicking, or pretending you’ve just stumbled into a tropical hideaway.

🌬️Breath of salty air? Yes, please!

Thanks to those high ocean swells rolling in over the past few days, Gerringong has been blanketed in a beautiful salty haze- and it turns out, it’s not just good for the views.
Some believe that breathing in the fresh salty air may have health benefits for the lungs, too... and with it comes a boost of feel-good negative ions said to lift your mood and clear the mind.

Come and get some for yourself- it’s Gerringong’s natural therapy.

🌋 A landscape millions of years in the making…

Ever wandered through Bombo Quarry and thought, “This place looks prehistoric”? You’d be right. The towering basalt columns here are made of latite rock – ancient leftovers from the last volcanic eruptions in the area.

A massive eruption 240 million years ago also helped shape the dramatic coastline we know and love today – including icons like the Kiama Blowhole and Rangoon Island.

🚶‍♂️ There’s a terrific walking trail around Bombo Headland where you can see it all up close. Plan your visit here: https://bit.ly/4moweCP

Baby, it's cold outside! 🧣☕
Winter in our region calls for one thing: comfort. Think steaming mugs, ocean mist, roaring fires, and good food shared in good company. Whether you’re chasing a slow morning or a snug night out, here are a few local gems serving warmth by the cupful.

ID:
1. The Blue Swimmer at Seahaven
For those who love their mornings unhurried and their coffee just right. This waterside café is all about seasonal flavours, serene views, and the kind of quiet that makes you linger longer.

2. The Hill Bar and Kitchen
Coastal chill? Not here. Perched above the waves, The Hill is where morning coffees meet golden hour cocktails – always served with sweeping views and a laid-back vibe.

3. Olive & Vine
When only comfort food will do, Olive & Vine delivers. Picture a bowl of rich, house-made pasta, a glass of red, and candlelight glinting off wine glasses – the perfect winter dinner scene.

4. Grand Hotel Kiama
Step inside, feel the heat of the fireplace, and wrap your hands around a spiced mulled cider. Pair it with a perfectly cooked steak and you’ve got yourself the ultimate winter wind-down.

5. Torys Kiama Inn Hotel
Cosy doesn’t always mean carbs and candles – sometimes it’s a towering seafood platter for two, best shared with cold drinks and warm company. Available on weekends only, it’s the perfect excuse to gather, graze, and toast to winter by the coast.

Picture perfect Werri Beach.

From the tranquil lagoon at the north end to the ocean pool tucked into the southern cliffs, Werri Beach has a bit of everything. Fancy a paddle in calm waters? Tick. Exploring craggy rock shelves? Double tick. A bracing winter swim to wake you right up? You’re in the right place.

Surfers love it here, and for good reason. The southern reef break off the point holds up in most conditions, while 'Pine Trees' offers those classic rolling breaks. Hot tip: swing by The Kiosk at the Surf Club (open 6.30-10.30am, daily) for a post-surf caffeine and social fix.

On the hunt for more top surf breaks? Our local's guide has you covered: https://bit.ly/4lFrzMF (but let’s just keep it between us) 🤫

Recognised as one of Australia’s most breathtaking coastal trails, this is where the ocean has carved its story into every headland.

The Kiama Coast Walk is more than just a track– it’s 20 kilometres of wonder, winding from Minnamurra to Gerringong. Along the way, you’ll trace the edges of ancient sea cliffs (like the one pictured here), wander through peaceful beaches, and stroll past rolling green hills that seem to spill into the ocean.

And if you’re planning to do the whole thing (or just a little part), here’s everything you need to know: https://bit.ly/4622cji
