Artist Spotlight - Bob Ferguson

A retired land valuer, Bob is now pursuing painting for pleasure, drawing on a lifelong interest in art. He attended evening classes at Claremont and Perth Art Schools, where printmaking and graphic art were of particular interest.

Bob’s main artistic pursuit is the Australian landscape, with the colours and character of the bush providing much of his inspiration. He is particularly inspired by the work of Albert Namatjira.

Favourite pastime? Playing tennis twice a week.

Tea or coffee? Coffee, Long Mac topped up

Sunrise or sunset? Sunset, get up too late to see sunrise

Beach or bush? Like both beach and bush, but for painting prefer the bush. There’s more colours.

Favourite place in Kojonup or the surrounding area? Favorite place in Kojonup was Gallery Aura, but that’s now gone. Kodja Place has now taken over

What's one thing people might not know about you? Recently I was part of a successful 4 person art exhibition at Atwell House that included my daughter, Shannon Melville

The Story of the Mural - Panel 2

Elizabeth was the daughter of William and Bridget Grover who farmed on the Kojonup-Katanning Road at ‘Indinup’.

Elizabeth trained for three years at the Perth Public Hospital having spent 12 months at the Glasgow Women’s Hospital in Scotland where she spent time as a district nurse. It was whilst living in Scotland that Elizabeth became a member of the Suffragette Movement and was listed as one of the first registered midwives in Australia in 1913.

With eight years of experience in a senior position in Perth, at the age of 40 Elizabeth enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Services on 12th June 1915. Her enlistment preceded two of her cousins Leo and Clarence Grover who enlisted from Kojonup - both of whom died in service.

She proceeded to Harefield, England with the 1st Australian General Hospital where she remained until August 1917, when she was transferred to Alexandria as a Senior Nurse. Whist in Cairo, and nursed Katanning men from the 10 Light Horse whom she had known since her childhood - Hugo Throssell often came to visit his men. In September 1917 she was promoted to Sister.

Transferred to Salonika on the Macedonian front, Elizabeth remained for over twelve months until January 1919. Conditions in Salonika were appalling with dysentery and malaria rife, so it was a very trying time for the nurses working whilst enduring searing summer heat and snow and sleet in the winter with little water or heating.

Elizabeth returned to this area with the War Graves Commission in 1931 where Turkish POW’s she had preciously nursed recognised her and made her very welcome.

Play Cafe! 🥳
Play Cafe will be running every Wednesday during school term from 9:30am – 11:30am
Join Kristel and Nat for a FREE relaxed, drop-in play session where little ones can play, explore and make new friends while the grown-ups enjoy a cuppa, a chat and connect with other families in the community.
During the cooler months, Play Cafe is held at the RSL Hall.
Everyone is welcome, including mums, dads, grandparents, carers, aunties, uncles and anyone caring for young children.

🌹 A big winter prune is coming for our roses 🌹
Visitors to the Kojonup Rose Garden may notice some major pruning taking place over the coming days.
Many of the roses have become very dense and overgrown, with some plants starting to lean and struggle under the amount of growth. This year they need a much heavier winter prune than usual.
The Shire has engaged John Kelly from JGS Roses, a specialist in rose pruning and rose care, to carry out the work. 🌹👨‍🌾
The garden may look quite bare once the pruning is finished, but this is intentional. The aim is to remove excess and weak growth, improve the shape of the plants and give the roses the best chance to come back strong and healthy.
We know the rose garden is important to our community, so we wanted to let everyone know what is happening before the work starts. 😊
We look forward to seeing the garden come back to life over spring. 🌸🌹🌼

The Kojonup Memorial Hall is turning 100.
The Shire of Kojonup, together with the Kojonup RSL, invites the community and visitors to join us on Saturday, 22 August 2026, from 11am to 2.15pm to commemorate the centenary of this important part of Kojonup’s history.
It will be a special opportunity to come together as a community, reflect on the history and significance of the Memorial Hall, and honour those who have served.
With a range of commemorative activities, military displays and presentations taking place throughout the day, we encourage the community and visitors to come along and be part of this significant milestone.

The Story of the Mural - Panel 1

Some members of our community may not realise that Brigadier Potts initially served in the 16th Battalion in Gallipoli and Egypt and was a Company Commander on the Western Front during the First World War. During that time, he was awarded a Military Cross in France.

Between wars he served with 25th Light Horse (machine gun) Regiment and when the Second World War began, he was second in Command of the 2/16th infantry and awarded DSO in the Middle East. Promoted to Brigadier in 1942 he commanded the 21st Brigade on the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea – the campaign for which he is perhaps the most well-known. The Kokoda Track Memorial Bridge and stature of Brigadier Potts are much visited in Apex Park.

During his career he was mentioned in dispatches four times, once in the First World War and three times in the second, before returning home to Kojonup to Farm

The depiction of his young face as our First World War serviceman is appropriate as a representation of the selfless service of all who left Kojonup to serve their nation and to honour their sacrifice.
