Yesterday we lost a legend in the birding world. Rodney Bushell, known as Bushy to his friends has died. He was the go to person to find the Gouldian Finch in Wyndham in the Kimberley. I’ll miss my mate. RIP Bushy.

Visited Iron Range NP last week, where it rained, a lot, but still managed to see 4 new birds on my 1 day of birding.
👉White-faced Robin (so cute they look like they are smiling)
👉Chestnut-breasted Cuckoo (very strong call)
👉Red-cheeked Parrot (a bit dark against the sky)
👉Tropical Scrubwren.
Saw lots of Eclectus Parrots flying but not good enough for a photo, heard lots of Yellow-billed Kingfishers saw a female Magnificent Riflebird, and heard the male calling but no sighting of him. I will return 😄

The Nutmeg Mannikin is an introduced species. Popular as a caged bird, some escaped or were released into the wild in Sydney and Brisbane in the 1930s. It is a small plump finch with a dark brown face and throat, The upper body is chestnut brown and the underparts are white with dark brown scalloping, while the legs, feet, and large, deep bill are grey. They are native to South Asia, ranging from India to southern China and southeast into the Philippines and Indochina. There was a small family of these birds at Cattana Wetlands here in Cairns.

There's a type of bird called the Spectacled Monarch that's commonly found in Cairns. These birds feed on insects and are typically found foraging below the canopy in foliage, on tree trunks, and on vines. They can be found in coastal northeastern and eastern Australia, including coastal islands, from Cape York, Queensland to Port Stephens, New South Wales. Although they are less common in the south, they can also be found in Papua New Guinea.

The Fan-tailed Cuckoo is a brood parasite; laying its eggs in the nests of other species of birds. Host species include flycatchers, fairy-wrens, scrubwrens, and thornbills, particularly the Brown Thornbill. A single egg is laid in the nest and one of the host's eggs is removed. The young cuckoo generally hatches earlier than the host's eggs and proceeds to eject the other eggs or hatchlings. The seemingly unaware foster parents then rear the cuckoo chick. What a mean bird! This bird I photographed at Davies Creek falls near Cairns on Christmas day.
