Relax & Enjoy✅ The Gibb River Road is a former cattle route that stretches almost 660 kilometres (410 mi) through The Kimberley between the Western Australian town of Derby and the Kununurra and Wyndham junction of the Great Northern Highway. Like its namesake, which does not actually cross the road but runs nearby at 16°06.108′S 126°31.075′E, it is named after geologist and explorer Andrew Gibb Maitland. The Gibb River Road is one of the two major roads which dissect the Kimberley region—the other being the extreme northern section of Great Northern Highway which runs further to the south. The road is often closed due to flooding during the wet season, which is typically November through March, although delayed openings have been known to happen, frustrating the tourism industry as well as locals who rely on the road. The Gibb River Road has scenic views of geological formations and natural scenery, aboriginal and pastoral history, as well as rare and unique fauna and flora.[3] Attractions along the Road include Windjana Gorge National Park, Tunnel Creek National Park, Adcock Gorge, Manning Gorge, Galvans Gorge, Lennard Gorge, Bell Gorge, and King Leopold Ranges. Accommodation is offered by several cattle stations in the area including Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge, Mount Elizabeth Station, Drysdale River Station, the El Questro Station, and Charnely River Station. We are aloud to keep 10x Mud Crab per boat.
We put 2x back that only had 1 claw.
So came home with 9 full males.

🌡️ GIBB RIVER ROAD — THE HEAT IS ON

Temperatures are now climbing into the 36°C–46°C+ range across parts of the Kimberley.

We are entering the BUILD-UP TO THE WET SEASON — and conditions can become extremely hot, humid and physically demanding.

If you are travelling the Gibb River Road at this time of year, you need to be VERY WELL PREPARED.

☀️ CHANGE THE WAY YOU TRAVEL

Get up early 5 am and get to your next destination early - But watch for wandering cattle and kangaroos

Travel during the cooler morning hours and aim to reach your destination before 10am, rather than being out on the road during the hottest part of the day.

Do not underestimate the heat.

Once temperatures start pushing 35°C, 40°C and beyond, conditions can become dangerous very quickly — particularly if something goes wrong with your vehicle or you become stranded.

🚨 IF YOU ARE NOT PREPARED — DON'T GO

If you don't know what "very well prepared" means for remote Kimberley travel in extreme heat, seriously consider deferring your trip until the cooler months of next year ....for example April Ma 2027

Always:

• Carry plenty of water
• Ensure your vehicle is properly prepared
• Carry recovery and emergency equipment
• Tell family or friends your travel plans
• Check in with them along the way
• Avoid travelling during the extreme heat of the day

PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN THE KIMBERLEY DURING THE BUILD-UP.

October, November and December can be unforgiving.

The Gibb River Road isn't going anywhere.

If you're not prepared for the heat, wait.

Your adventure can wait until the conditions are right.
