WHALE WATCHING SEASON:
Whales head north (traveling east past Gippsland): May to July.
Whales head south (travelling west past Gippsland): August to November.
While there are no regular whale watching boat tours into the Southern Ocean from Lakes Entrance, there are a few good land based lookouts in the area.
1. Jemmy’s Point (near the light tower)
2. Red Bluff near Lake Tyers
3. Beacon Reserve, Lake Tyers Road
4. Pettmans Beach sand dune
5. Marlo
6. Cape Conran

The most common whales to see travelling along the Gippsland coast are Humpback Whales and Southern Right Whales.

Completed a Birdata monthly Shore-bird survey of 4 defined locations on Rigby Island and Flanigan Island today.
Total number of species spotted: 21.
The number of species is similar to other months however the number of a species at each location does vary for each month ie. Great Cormorant > down, Black-faced Cormorant > up. Chestnut Teal > up. Pelican > down. Pied Oystercatcher > up. This variation can be due to weather, tides, time, disturbance, breeding seasons or migratory movements.
This does highlight the long term need for regular monitoring to get an average number, to determine if individual bird species numbers are going up or down….

Happy World Aquatic Animal Day! Today is your chance to celebrate (more than any other day of the year) the incredible diversity of life that lives below the Earth’s watery surfaces. All across the world, there are over 260,000 marine species (that we know of!). From the microscopic zooplankton to the enormous blue whale, our oceans contain an overwhelmingly large range of creatures.

Today we celebrate all of them. The weird, wacky, fishy, cute, cuddly, bottom-dwelling, bioluminescent and soaring array of animals we are lucky enough to share the Earth with. Take the chance today to share your favourite marine animal with us, or a friend!

While we appreciate the vast beauty of life under water, we also need to acknowledge the constant threats to aquatic livelihood. Pollution, traffic, overfishing and climate change are just a few factors causing biodiversity declines in our waterways and oceans. Help aquatic conservation efforts today by cleaning up a beach or riverbank with a friend, or reading up on species currently under threat in your area.

At the Marine Mammal Foundation, our research is aimed at continuing marine conservation practices in Victoria through the reduction of pollution and anthropogenic disturbances. On World Aquatic Animal Day, consider supporting our increasingly important research with a tax-deductible donation, or by adopting a marine mammal. Every little bit counts in the fight to conserve life under water.

Completed our monthly (April) shorebird survey of 4 designated locations this afternoon. 24 different species of shore-birds recorded.
Each month, our team of 3, record the numbers of individual species at each location (approx 1km of lake-side beach) which vary each month, which highlights seasonal variations…
Species included 5 species of Cormorant, Hooded Plovers, Royal Spoonbill, Hoary-headed Grebes and White-faced Herons. All recordings are placed on Birdlife Australia Birdata App.
We also checked throughout the day for Pelicans with red numbered bands: 13 red band numbers recorded. See Love our Pelicans
