It's always wonderful to catch up with my favourite up and coming and immensely talented young artist Sakura Fisher, and her lovely mum Mari, at EP Gallery in the Quadrant Mall. And my fur kids Lizzie and Buffy love visiting too (although Buffy was camera shy today).

As part of my acclaimed journey through Ye Olde Launceston I include Eleanora Pulcini's EP and Experientia Populi Galleries and Leoni Duff's Gallery and studio in the historic old Brisbane Hotel building. Supporting local artists is integral to the cultural experiences I provide and if you're interested in purchasing something from a local artist on display at EP Gallery I can take payments via card or cash.

And my support extends to purchasing artworks and I have two by Sakura, one from Tasmanian Aboriginal artist Rodney Gardner and one by Leoni Duff. If you are interested there's also a state government program where you can get an interest free loan where you can purchase art from local artists. Look up collect-art.com.au for more information.

When you find an interesting, and fascinating, piece of history and you just have to follow it down the rabbit hole of research! That's one of the elements that make my experiences so unique and comprehensive. I'm a local historian and qualified researcher, and create amazing stories from what I find out 😄

It was a chilly morning but that was no deterrent for my guests who were from WA and Melbourne. They loved everything and were particularly impressed by being able to visit EP Gallery (where they purchased some of Sakura Fisher's wonderful cards) and Leoni Duff's Gallery and studio. Leoni was running one of her excellent art classes so it was great to see local artists in action!

The inclusion of art galleries and studio as part of my acclaimed journey through Ye Olde Launceston has proven to be such a wonderful addition and one of the things that set me apart from others. I believe it is something unique to me as well!

Wow, what a hectic but great day that started with hosting this wonderful group of people from Health Consumers Tasmania on my Tasmanian Aboriginal histories and cultures experiences at the Cataract Gorge. It was an early start as I also cooked up a breakfast of egg and bacon rolls, wallaby, pork and bratwurst sausages (from my friends at Casalinga Gourmet Meats) for them. And also had some homemade treats from the CWA Shop!

After that I also hosted a group of local people on my acclaimed journey through Ye Olde Launceston. They were amazed to find out so much about our great little city and highly entertained by the stories I shared with them 😁

This is the epitome of optimism 😁

What a great and fun morning I had in our iconic Cataract Gorge with a lovely family, Rach, Williams and Jesse, from Brisbane. They were amazed and enjoyed immensely the experiences I provided for them, including some art using Ochres. To finish our wonderful morning we had a ride on the acclaimed Gorge Scenic Chairlift. Thanks to Sara of Journey on Travel for engaging me!

This followed on from a twilight tour I provided for a group of conference attendees last Thursday. They loved everything and were amazed at the depth of knowledge I could share with them. Thanks to the lovely Jo Larter of the chairlift for organising it all and including me!

It was great to have some time to catch up with my favourite up and coming local artist Sakura Fisher, and her lovely mum Mari, today at EP Gallery. Sakura is on her way to establishing herself as a wonderful artistic talent and already getting commissions!

EP Gallery is one of Eleanor Pulcini's two galleries in the Quadrant Mall and not only is Eleanora an amazing artist she is such an energetic and enthusiastic promoter of Launceston's arts and culture scene. And Launceston is truly blessed to have not only Eleanora but also, among others, Leoni Duff and Rodney Gardner.

It is such a privilege and honour to not only know such amazing people but get to showcase them, and other local artists, as part of my journey through Ye Olde Launceston!

This is a sneak preview of one of my latest original art acquisitions by a local artist. I don't just pay lip service to supporting local artists and when I can I purchase artworks from them.

Full story will come tomorrow 🙂

Meet Buffy the history buff and she's an agile hound. Buffy is standing on an interesting but often overlooked monument in George Street of Launceston's underground history, the sewer/stormwater system. Launceston was groundbreaking and amongst the first places in the world to put in place such infrastructure.

It does still cause problems though, and to get the full story you need to join me on my acclaimed journey through Ye Olde Launceston. And feel free to invite Buffy too 😊

Phew, what an epic day at the Cataract Gorge firstly hosting this wonderful group of people who were on a visit organised through the Australian Defence Force. They loved finding out about the ancient origins of the Gorge, its significance for Tasmanian Aboriginal people and some more contemporary history.

After that I had around 50 Grade 7s from Prospect High School who were keen to know about Tasmanian Aboriginal deep time history and connections to the Gorge. They were my second group this week and I have another group tomorrow. It's all go here at WWT central 😊

Our Story

Wallaby Walkabout Tours began in 2016 and is the creation of Tasmanian Aboriginal and local historian, Geoff McLean. Geoff is the primary guide and has many years experience lecturing and tutoring in Aboriginal Studies at the University of Tasmania where he also gained knowledge from various Elders.

As part of that knowledge, and his research into Aboriginal cultural connections to the Cataract Gorge, Launceston, Geoff was able to identify opportunities to share that knowledge through conducting guided walking and sightseeing tours of the Cataract Gorge in Launceston and the adjoining Trevallyn Reserve. Adding to that knowledge Geoff is also a local historian who has years of experience creating and providing guided walking tours of Launceston highlighting its heritage and the various intriguing characters involved.

Geoff is a master storyteller with an incredible depth of knowledge that enables him to intertwine 38 000 years of Aboriginal history with that of the more ‘recent’ 212 years of European heritage, including the development of the Cataract Gorge, Launceston, into the wonderful attraction it is today. Geoff is also a ‘born and bred’ Launceston fellow who grew up with the Cataract Gorge, Launceston, as an integral part of his life. As such he has unique personal connections, knowledge and stories to share about some of the more recent, and interesting, events that have added to the fabric of the Cataract Gorge in Launceston.
