Curley Heckendorf was the founding President of the museum and a local war hero.

Recommendation for Military Medal
M.M. : NX36791 Sgt. HECKENDORF E.E.
In the action at SI MPANG REN GAM, 27 Jan’42 Sgt. then L/Cpl Heckendorf acting as Intelligence Corporal was conspicuous by his courage and efficiency in his task of leading two “B” Coy Platoons to the assistance of D Coy who were being hard pressed by approximately one Enemy Bn.
Throughout the task Heckendorf was under heavy fire and despite the scant information available he was successful in leading the Coy into position.
This action is indicative of Cpl. HECKENDORF’s courage and unstinted service throughout all the engagements in which this regiment took part, exemplified by the part that he had twice previously been cut off behind the Enemy lines while on reconnaissance of a dangerous nature, returning on both occasions with the job successfully accomplished.
Sgt. HECKENDORF’S courage and devotion to duty combined with his efficiency merit some reward and I recommend that he be awarded the MILITARY MEDAL.

Unfortunately his service was not recognized by the award of this medal.

The museum will be open after 11am today.

Over 100 people will be attending the Awaiting the Ballot Book Launch at the Lockhart Showgrounds on Saturday evening. We have descendants from 8 of the original landholders who were successful in the 1907 North Brookong land ballot. Some of the original settlers left their properties within a few years and we have had difficulties locating some descendants and others no longer feel a connection after over 100 years.

However descendants from as far away as north Queensland from the following original landholders will be in attendance.
Portion 67 – George Smith - named Stoneleigh
Portion 68 – Arthur Hugh Gilmour – named Glenarthur
Portion 72 – Frederick August Andriske – named Kiwi
Portion 73 – George Francis Crichton – named Austinmere
Portion 74 – Frederick William Wiese – named Daisy Dale
Portion 97 – Michael Joseph Doherty – named Innisfail
Portion 98 – Charles Westblade – named Pine Grove
Portion 99 – John/Alexander Montgomery – named Mayola

Members of the public are invited the book launch at 8pm Saturday March 7th.

Over the years Greens Gunyah Museum have produced three small books about our local history.

Big Brookong was written many years ago by Frank Pritchard. We recently had to do a reprint so now have plenty of copies available.

The First Fifty Years was written by John Alexander for Lockhart’s 125 Years Celebrations. It looks at Early European Settlement in the Lockhart District from 1845 to 1895.

Ploughman to Politician written by Rene Anderson tells the life story of William Halliday of Brookong Station.

These three books can be purchased at the museum for $5 each. They will also be on sale Saturday night at the Showground at the book launch of our latest local history book, Awaiting the Ballot which looks at the breakup of Brookong Station and the introduction of closer settlement around Lockhart. Cost for this book will be $45.

In the early 1900s there was a huge demand for farmland. Brookong Station was being sub divided and in 1907 the North Brookong Land Ballot was held. There were 970 applicants for the 14 blocks which are located out along Spanish Avenue.

The Lockhart & District Historical Society has published a book written by Rod Harvey, a descendant of one the successful applicants. This book tells the story of the families on these 14 blocks and the community that was created and their connections to Lockhart.

Many young men came and camped at the Lockhart Showgrounds to check out the blocks available and try their luck in the ballot. It is fitting that the book is being launched at the Lockhart Showground. The public are invited to the book launch at 8pm on Saturday March 7th.

This evening Green's Gunyah Museum unveils their newest exhibition titled Women and Wool. The display tells the story of three Lockhart women who have excelled in their various fields - a magnificent collection of award winning woollen evening gowns, created by Suzanne Sly and entered into the prestigious Golden Gown Awards at Wagga Wagga, forms the centrepiece and was the catalyst for the theme. Another talented local spinner and weaver, Trish Herford, collaborated with Wagga designer Margaret Wright to create another collection of award winning garments. Together with these two talented local ladies we showcase the story of Nicki Guttler, a young Lockhart woman who holds a number of world records for speed shearing.

Bryce H**e Furphy
While the women have been preparing the Women & Wool display, the men have been busy restoring the 1910 furphy which was donated to the museum by Bryce H**e, a grandson of Thomas Bond. It is likely that Bryce inherited it from the Bond family.

The furphy was re barrelled at the Good Old Days Festival at Barellan in October, and the Lockhart Men’s Shed have shaped the shafts. The Men’s Shed have also been helpful building the plints for the Women & Wool display and the museum thanks them for their assistance.

The furphy is now on display next to Tim Fischer’s Ford Tractor.
