24 hours in Khiva, Uzbekistan! 🇺🇿

Another amazing fast train from Bukhara to Urgench. Seriously Australia… we really need to wake up and join the fast-train phase! 🚄😂

More M’s today — lots of Mosques, Madrasas and Minarets! I’m finding it very hard to pick a favourite place on this trip, but Khiva certainly delivers some seriously beautiful photo opportunities.

I even walked a section of the old city wall today. Clearly, OHS hasn’t quite made it to Khiva 😂. I wasn’t too worried about falling off the wall… it was the steps to get up there that frightened me! Definitely not designed with accessibility in mind or somewhere with a shoe size larger than
a kids 7!

I also had a traditional Uzbek bread-making class, which was great fun. 🍞 Then wandered the many little streets trying VERY hard not to buy anything… which is surprisingly difficult when there are so many beautiful things tempting you! Although, I will say, the “Silk Road bargain” isn’t always quite as cheap as you’d expect!
The prices of the embroidery, carpets and ceramics probably would have meant I would have had to sell many organs to purchase something.

One more day in Tashkent tomorrow, then it’s back to China! 🇨🇳

So far, Uzbekistan has been a photographer’s delight, a meat lover’s paradise, a history buff’s dream and, honestly, a destination that would please most people looking for something a little different!

Started my day with yet another 🚄 Afrosiyab fast train, this time from Samarkand to Bukhara. Honestly, these trains are unbelievably good — I think our government could take a few lessons in transportation! 😂

Arriving in Bukhara’s Old Town felt like stepping straight into a desert city and back in time. So much history everywhere, with the ancient Silk Road and the caravans that once travelled through Central Asia.

And if you’re thinking I’m talking about your Jayco Journey… 😂 you might want to brush up on your Silk Road history instead!

Bukhara is absolutely beautiful, but WOW is it hot — 40+ degrees today! Just a little different to home! 🥵

And once again, it’s all about the M’s —
🕌 Mosques
🎓 Madrasas
🗼 Minarets
and don’t forget the mosaics! 😉

My lovely guide, Anait, has taught me so much over the last few days. I really do hope I remember at least a good portion of it! 😄

Learning about the history of the Silk Road, the caravans that travelled these ancient routes, and the rules and customs that governed life along the way has been absolutely fascinating. There is something very special about walking through places that have been part of this incredible history for centuries.

Today I visited Shakhi-Zinda, the stunning family necropolis of the Timurid dynasty. The name means “Living King”, and the complex is made up of a series of mausoleums and sacred buildings, with some of the most exquisite tilework in Uzbekistan. The intricate blues, turquoise, greens and geometric patterns are simply breathtaking — every corner seems to reveal another beautiful detail. 💙

We also wandered through the vibrant Siab Bazaar, full of colour, wonderful smells and local life, before visiting the magnificent Bibi-Khanum Mosque, one of Samarkand’s most impressive landmarks. Built during the time of Timur (Tamerlane), it was once one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world and is surrounded by fascinating stories and legends about its construction.

Another fast train tomorrow to the next stop and more blue mosaics I’m sure! 💙💙
