A small pocket of Western Australia, the Southern Forests region is one of incredible variety and abundance, and its status as one of the nation's premier food bowls is growing everyday. The Southern Forests locals have known about it for years; in this gorgeous, pristine part of the world, something magical is going on. Or the extraordinary fertility of the soils. Maybe it's the 365 growing days

of the year, or the purity of the rainfall. Or maybe it's a combination of all these things. Truth is, no one is really sure. But what we do know is this. Every time you bite into an apple, or slice an avocado, or you're tempted by a truffle, or any of the wondrous vegetables, meats, fruits and nuts that are grown in the Southern Forests region, you'll be left with no doubt that this array of fresh local produce simply looks, smells and tastes better. THAT'S A GENUINE EXPERIENCE. The Southern Forests Food Council was formed in 2012 to foster the Southern Forests region as one of the nation's key future food bowls and culinary tourism destinations.

Apple Brandy by On The Shoulders of Giants is a true Southern Forests original, crafted with care and full of local flavour.

It begins with cider made right here in Manjimup using fruit from Newton Orchards. That cider then travels to Whipper Snapper Distillery in East Perth, a proudly WA-owned small business, where it is carefully distilled into apple spirit. A portion of that spirit is then aged in ex sherry, bourbon and wine barrels, developing into a rich and complex brandy.

Visiting the region and wanting to try? You can pick up a bottle at Manjimup Bottleshop or Tall Timbers Bottleo, or enjoy it in a cocktail when visiting Cilantros Manjimup.

Drop in today and taste the best of the Southern Forests.

Ever tasted yuzu? This rare and fragrant citrus is taking centre stage at Waterfield Farms, just east of Manjimup. Farmer Paul Edwards is one of the first in WA to grow yuzu commercially, and he's turning heads with both the fruit and its bottled juice under the Southern Forest Yuzu brand.

Alongside gold kiwi fruit, pomegranates, and classic vegetables like cauliflower and cabbage, Paul’s farm showcases the incredible growing conditions of the Southern Forests region.

Yuzu is one of the exciting fragrant citrus fruits coming out of the Southern Forests right now. Prized for its unique flavour, blending lemon, mandarin, and grapefruit with floral and spicy notes.

Yuzu ripens annually from May to June after flowering in October. Harvested by hand from thorn-covered trees, it’s typically juiced or zested, adding a bright, aromatic kick to dressings, sauces, desserts, and cocktails. Packed with vitamin C and antioxidants, it supports immune health and offers a range of nutritional benefits.

Whether used in cooking or drinks, yuzu’s distinct flavour is quickly becoming a favourite in Australian kitchens.

Stay tuned this week to meet the passionate growers behind this unique citrus!

Jersey cattle are well known for their rich, creamy milk but their beef is something truly unique. With natural marbling, tender texture, and a deep, buttery flavour, Jersey beef is a gourmet experience and a melt-in-your-mouth finish.

Lake Janis Farm nestled in the Southern Forests, is the only producer of Jersey beef in Western Australia. Farmers Julia and Dean Ryan take a regenerative, organic approach to raising their cattle on year-round, multi-species pasture. The result is small-batch, high-quality beef that’s packed with flavour and raised with care.

If you’re visiting the region, be sure to taste it for yourself, you will find Jersey beef on the menu at Jersey Burgers and Two Little Black Birds Cafe, where it's cooked to perfection in delicious, locally inspired dishes.
Lake Janis Jersey beef is also available to purchase at a number of butchers and stores across Perth and the South West, and features on menus at select Perth restaurants. Keen to stock up? You can even order a half carcass. Full list available on the Lake Janis social pages.

Their gins are infused with standout local ingredients like seasonal cherries, Southern Forests pinot noir and strawberries, heirloom citrus, rosemary, native thyme, scarlet bottlebrush, and karri honey — creating truly distinctive spirits with a deep sense of place.

However you enjoy it, here’s to great gin, good company, and the passionate producers behind every drop. 🥂

Just out of Pemberton, the Heartbreak Trail in Warren River National Park offers one of the most scenic drives through karri country - and winter is the perfect time to explore it.

This 12km one-way gravel loop winds through towering karri forest, past the flowing Warren River and down to Heartbreak Crossing. Along the way, you’ll find canoe launch points, riverfront campsites at Drafty’s Camp and Warren Camp, and forest giants like the Marianne North Tree and the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree - which you can climb for breathtaking views of the forest.

Originally built for firefighting access, this trail now invites you to slow down, breathe in the fresh forest air and reconnect with nature. A walk trail also follows the loop if you prefer to explore on foot.

With the bush green and the river running, now’s the time to plan your visit. Pack the thermos, hit the track, and soak up the beauty of the Warren.
