Most people who’ve driven past Bones K**b have seen one volcano.
There are actually two.
The broad green dome that most people recognise is the shield volcano — built up slowly by lava flows over millions of years. But look at the back of the hill, and there’s something different: a steeper, rougher cone of reddish-brown rock. That’s the remains of a cinder cone, more explosive eruption that sat right within the other one.
You can see both from the ground if you know what you’re looking at. From the air, you can read the whole story at once.
✈️ Atherton Tablelands scenic flights from Mareeba — 30 minutes, and the landscape makes sense in a way it never quite does from the road.
