Hi All,

Just quick ( 🤔 ) up date on the Politics amongst our river mates!

As you may know from before there was the huge disruption to the locals when our old mate ‘Agro’ went on his final trip down the river a while ago, leaving a vacuum in the line up of the Alpha males along the river!
As you know there was the carnage and enhanced danger when the big non territorial males fought for the spot, but when they sorted that out and the fighting finished, big old mate ‘Nasher’ the Alpha from next door decided he might as well have the newly vacated dominion and cruised on in, kicked survivors of the blood fest out and claimed the lot!

He sorted the natural order out again and in that aftermath nearly killed one of the claimants who stuck around up the river and never moved on!
That croc a lot of you have now met being ‘Turbo’ was carving out a new space, for himself until that major fight where ‘Turbo’ nearly got decapitated by ‘Big Nash’.

Any way the latest update is that what appeared to be a settling down between the too and a kind of agreement between the two is not quite that!

Big ‘Nash’ is repeatedly going into what might have been considered the ceded territory to ‘Turbo’ and asserting his dominance!

It’s a bit like the English Kings who repeatedly made the kings of Scotland pay obeisance to them by bending the knee, in this case ‘Turbo’ is playing the game and running away before the big guy!

So now , we wait!

‘Turbo’ is not leaving and that is significant because he is claiming that patch as his and will not become the runaway style non territory owning nomad again!

It might take a year or so but that’s how Croc’s roll😆.

‘Turbo’is only getting bigger and ‘Big Nasher’ has got a huge Territory that he has to keep in order, which will slow him down!

So now, another race of survival until they both match up as fighters of equal competence, then they might settle into being neighbours!

For a while at least!

Hi all,

Just another quick update on the state of play with our river mates!

Many of our guests from last year will remember ‘Turbo’s story!

The big nomadic male that tried to take old mate ‘Agro’s territory when he took his last trip down the river!

Turbo got beaten off, by the Alpha male from next door ‘Nasher’ who then claimed Agro’s old territory for himself and added it on to his already large territory, including Marrakai Creek!

As I pointed out earlier Turbo found a sweet spot just up the river and just this side of the next Alpha further up!

He did all right not being disturbed much and could finally put a lot of weight on, not having to run away all the time!

Until, Big Nasher finally did a Territory check and discovered the now much bigger Turbo in ‘his’ space.

Both big males went to a huge head on fight with rookie Turbo nearly getting killed!
Nasher also got a rude shock with the ferocity of the fight, but clearly won.

Over the next while they both recovered and Turbo managed to retain a relatively small Territory and did recover!

Enter this last big Wet season and who knows what has happened since last year!

First run up river last week and it was awsome, a bit short on the females (we still have a lot flooded zones) but we got three of the big Alpha’s! All loud proud and ready to roll, but No Turbo!

What stood out was Nashers condition and what appears to have a tremendous growth surge over this wet season, he just appeared to be bigger and longer in every direction, he is really getting up there in size now, again we call on any citizen scientists that would be happy to help measure him up!

What was interesting was the the big old mate at the top of the river was well down into Turbo’s patch and no Turbo.
He was sporting some serious big croc fighting injuries, with very deep teeth holes imbedded in his top jaw and what looked like a very fresh very large injury down his left side!
So, where’s Turbo?…

I am happy to say we did another run up the river yesterday and we got all four big Alphas!..

Big Chad from up top was back in his space, but we got Turbo on the way back!

Big healthy and fighting fit!

We then got treated to something I have been waiting to see for nearly 10 months, the first eyes on interaction between these two since the Big Fight!

We know have a new status quo I think!..🤔

Big Nasher turned up as we were interacting with Turbo and saw him off, he pushed him up the river before turning back to us!

I think we have a new territorial boundary between the two protagonists!

I hope so! Apart from the big transient males dodging through from time to time we may now have a balanced social order and stability back to the river! Such is the Crocodile way!😬🐊

We are not fully up and running yet, with the flood waters ebbing we can now get the new pontoon and gangways back in the river!

Bring on the dry!.. Hopefully the fuel prices will moderate and we might get some visitors fleeing winter up from the South! 🤞

Hi all

It has been a long time for an actual update on both our ‘river mates’ and the river as such!
We lost our pontoon when Cyclone ‘Fina’ passed by, a welded cleat on the old pontoon gave way and it capsized! There was a long delay in righting it up as we had no low tides enough to get to the bottom and detach the components for lifting! It’s a bit hard going into the water with a couple of the locals standing by and hoping to score an easy meal!
We had Betty( of the jetty ) and another crocodile just a bit bigger than her within 5 metres of us as we were working on it!
No room for slips there!

The new Pontoon is ready to go in, we just have to let ‘Narelle’? Pass by! Who knows what water we will get out of that!

The river was flooded big time this year, but the Arnhem Highway either side of the bridge did not go under the water due to the highway upgrade in the last few years! There were a few extra culvert/bridges put in and they were all packed with local people having a go at catching a ‘Barra’, So don’t know if they caught much but they were having a great time! Picnic set ups and families out doing something different! There was a tricky element though, the crocs forage the edge of the floods and a few people were a bit close to the waters edge!
Live and learn I guess or more possibly not live and learn!…

We did lose one of our regular crocs it went up on the highway chasing the road kill and got hit by a vehicle! It was a tad under 3 metres long and attracted a lot of attention still being on the side of the road for a few days after! It did disappear but I don’t know if another croc took it away or someone souvenired it!

The Croc’s will return to their territories as the river recedes, although a few of the non territory owning crocs could easily have taken up residence in places opened up by the flooding, backyards and waterholes that are normally isolated from the creek systems! So early dry season explorers better be well ‘en garde’.

It will be interesting to see if the status quo has been maintained with the large dominant males in the river, we had a reset of Territories with a new Alpha inserting himself into the mix and a reset of their boundary lines last year!

So now we have ‘Sneaky’ in the first territory of the river, then ‘Nasher’ who also owns the Marrakai creek junction and took over ‘Aggros’ space when he died, then ‘Turbo’ the new big kid on the block, who was nearly killed by big ‘Nash’, but has survived and seems to have now gained his space in the system, then of course up top we have ‘Chad’ (AKA Chad Morgan). A doughty old fella that doesn’t want to extend his Territory or make new conquests, so him and ‘Turbo’ quickly came to an understanding as to ‘the boundaries’!

Not so ‘Nasher and Turbo’ they still have to finalise the marker line in the river for their territories, their epic fight last year almost saw ‘Turbo’ get decapitated, but big ‘Nash’
got a hell of a fright as well, so that might be, all over bar the shouting, we will see!🥹

Hopefully, we will be up and running by the start of April, but the weather is very tricky at the moment!
