Today, parts of Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre are displaying distinct pink, orange and red hues as conditions within Australia’s largest salt lake change.

While we still have an inland sea, as water evaporates, salinity increases in the remaining water, creating conditions favourable to salt-adapted organisms.
Microscopic algae and pink brine shrimp may contribute to the striking colouration observed in these hypersaline waters.

The result is an amazing natural phenomenon visible across sections of the lake, from above.

Another chapter in the extraordinary transformation of Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre and the ever-changing landscapes of the Australian Outback.

13/10/26 Witness the magic of Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre after the outback storms this week.

Near the Upper Claypan at the northern end of the lake, rainwater sits above the salt crust, creating a spectacular, crystal-clear, mirror-like surface.

From above, tracking the 90 km-long Warburton Groove reveals an ancient landscape brought to life by water. Thunderstorms during the week have reactivated this vast channel, carving intricate patterns through the white salt crust and reflecting the outback sky beautifully.

Severe thunderstorms across the South Australian outback ⛈️

Today, we’re watching thunderstorms develop across the landscapes surrounding Marree and Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre, with an immense storm system sweeping across Lake Eyre and a second storm out towards The Simpson Desert.

The lightning tracker reveals electrical activity across the region, while satellite imagery from Zoom Earth shows the extensive cloud formations associated with these storm systems.

Situated in one of Australia’s most arid landscapes, Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre experiences an incredibly harsh and dry climate. Rainfall is highly variable, making significant rain and thunderstorms rare events to observe across this vast desert environment. When moisture and atmospheric instability combine, the skies can transform dramatically over this ancient landscape as they did today.

These weather events offer a fascinating glimpse into the powerful atmospheric processes that shape the Australian outback.

9/10/26 The pelicans are on the move… and they’ve turned up in the Simpson Desert.

As Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre becomes increasingly salty, thousands of pelicans and their chicks appear to be on the move, migrating through the Outback.

They’ve found refuge in remote freshwater lakes scattered across the Simpson Desert, where rainwater from the past year has collected and remained. From the air, you can see just how many have made their way here, with huge concentrations of pelicans spread across these temporary desert lakes.

There’s something pretty special about seeing this many pelicans gathered in such an unexpected corner of the Outback, making the most of the freshwater that remains.

Out here, water dictates everything. When freshwater appears in the desert, the birds know exactly where to find it.

6/10/26 Months after the flood, the water is still on the move!

Seen on our Birdsville Full Day Flight, floodwater continues to drain back through the vast floodplains towards Cooper Creek after spending months spread across the Strzelecki Desert and Channel Country.

From the air, the countless channels and remaining pools of water show just how much water moved across this landscape during the flood, and how slowly it can make its way back into the main creek system, continuing to flood over the Birdsville Track.

5/10/26 Salvation Jane, seen from two very different perspectives.

From the air, the scale of the purple flowering across the Flinders Ranges is incredible. From the ground, you get a completely different appreciation for the colour, texture and detail.

Salvation Jane is a significant w**d and certainly has its downsides, but while it’s flowering, its abundant nectar can also provide a temporary food source for bees and other insects.

It’s a good reminder that landscapes are rarely black and white. After good rainfall, even a plant with a complicated reputation can become a striking part of the seasonal landscape.

Only four weeks left of the 2026 Arid Air season.

And what a season it has been. We hope for those that are unable to make it that you’ve enjoyed our coverage. Please let us know where you are watching from.

From the air, Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre and the Channel Country are putting on an extraordinary show. Vast sheets of water winding through the ancient landscape, shimmering salt flats, deep channels and brilliant colours stretching all the way to the horizon.

As the water moves across the country, every flight reveals something different. Creeks and floodplains have come alive, the desert changes colour, and the sheer scale of this ancient outback landscape becomes almost impossible to comprehend from above.

But time is running out.

Arid Air finishes operations on 30 October as the outback desert heat and winds begin to build.

So if you’ve been thinking about making the trip to Marree and seeing this extraordinary landscape for yourself, there are now just four weeks left.

This is one season you won’t want to miss. The Inland Sea.

30/9/26 The Lake Eyre Yacht Club’s 2026 Regatta is currently underway on Lake Killamperpunna, on the Cooper Creek near Etadunna Station in South Australia.

The regatta runs from 27 September to 3 October 2026, with yachts sailing on Lake Killamperpunna following flooding through the Cooper Creek system.

Cooper Creek, Birdsville Bypass Track, this afternoon 29/9/26

The heavy vehicle barge carrying a road train- cattle truck across the swollen Cooper Creek (Birdsville Bypass Track)

With the Channel Country still holding large volumes of floodwater, the barge provides a vital crossing for heavy vehicles travelling through this remote part of the outback.
