School swimming carnivals have long been a milestone in childhood. But across Australia, there are growing concerns about declining swimming capability among primary school students.

In this article, Dr Amy Peden UNSW highlights what many in the water safety sector are seeing - too many children are struggling to demonstrate basic swimming and survival skills.

Royal Life Saving research reinforces this concern. Many children are not meeting essential safety benchmarks, including the ability to swim 50 metres and tread water for two minutes. These are not competitive standards - they are survival skills.

Swimming and water safety education is a cornerstone of drowning prevention. If participation and proficiency decline, risk increases.

Drowning is preventable. Skills matter. 💧

The team is back on deck, the pools are buzzing, and we’re kicking off a brand new year with genuine excitement – because 2026 marks 30 years of Superfish Swim Schools. It’s a moment to reflect, celebrate, and feel incredibly grateful for the journey so far.

Founded by Queensland locals Andrew OLY and Karen Baildon at just 24 years old, Superfish opened its first swim school in 1996. Three decades on, Superfish has spanned 7 swim school locations across South East Queensland (currently 5), with plans already underway for future expansion.

Along the way, Superfish has proudly:
✔️ Taught and trained thousands of swimming instructors
✔️ Built a team of over 100 current Superfish swimming instructors
✔️ Delivered Drowning Prevention, Learning to Swim, Stroke Correction and Competitive swimming programs to nearly one million Queensland children
✔️ Welcomed more than 6,000 Queensland children into lessons this very week

To our families, swimmers, and communities – past and present – thank you. Your trust and support have shaped everything Superfish stands for. This milestone belongs to you as much as it does to us, and we’re proud to continue making a lasting difference by keeping children safe, confident, and capable in the water.
