If there's one thing that no one can agree on and yet everyone can agree on, it's the 'Top 5' of ANY list! So this one should be no different....
Here's our Top 5 (in order) of Best Australian Pub Rock bands - and yes, they all got their starts grinding it out in pubs across this Great Southern Land. Got your own Top 5? Add them in the comments below.
#1 - Cold Chisel
No band defines Australian pub rock more completely. Working-class lyrics, towering singalongs, and Ian Moss’s legendary guitar tone. Still played in pubs weekly, decades later.
Essentials: 'Khe Sanh', 'Flame Trees', 'Bow River'
#2 - The Angels
Darker, louder, and meaner than most of their peers. Their shows were notorious for intensity - this was pub rock at its most aggro.
Essentials: 'Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again (NWGFFO)', 'No Secrets'
#3 - AC/DC
Started in pubs, perfected the sound there, then conquered the world without losing the grit. Simple riffs, relentless groove, zero pretension.
Essentials: 'It’s a Long Way to the Top', 'Let There Be Rock'
#4 - Rose Tattoo
Tattoos, leather, beer, and bruises - Tattoo embodied the rougher edge of the pub scene.
Essentials: 'Bad Boy for Love', 'Nice Boys'
#5 - Midnight Oil
Less boozy, more brainy - but still pub-worthy. They proved pub rock could be political and explosive without losing mass appeal.
Essentials: 'Power and the Passion', 'US Forces', 'Blue Sky Mine'
