Join the AMCouncil Melbourne Chapter on Tuesday, 21 July for a lunchtime technical session exploring Asset Investment Planning: Critical Success Factors for a Strategic Business Function.

Presented by Rory Gibbons, this session will examine why effective Asset Investment Planning is essential for asset-intensive organisations seeking to unlock capital, improve portfolio performance and generate greater value for stakeholders.

Rory brings more than a decade of experience implementing AIP frameworks across the public and private sectors, with work spanning education, local government, maritime infrastructure, transport and water utilities. Drawing on practical case studies, he will share key learnings on project fundamentals, asset criticality, outcome communication and common watchouts that can strengthen AIP practices.

What should AI do in asset management — and what must humans still do?

Artificial intelligence is already changing how asset management professionals work. It can support document review, image interpretation, pattern detection, deterioration forecasting, maintenance planning, investment optimisation and reporting.

But asset management decisions are not just technical. They affect value, risk, cost, performance, safety, service, sustainability and communities.

That is why the Asset Management Council is launching a member-led project to explore the Human–AI Boundary in Asset Management.

Through a series of online workshops, AMCouncil members are invited to contribute practical examples, case studies, concerns and professional judgement to help shape future AMCouncil guidance.

We want to hear from members about:

• AI use cases already underway
• pilots that worked — and those that did not
• decisions where AI may help
• decisions that should remain human-led
• concerns about data, trust, safety, accountability and capability

The outcome will be a living AMCouncil knowledge product: The Human–AI Boundary Framework for Asset Management.

AI will change asset management. The asset management community should help define how.

🏆 2026 AMPEAK Best Paper Award

Congratulations to Lalinda Karunaratne, CPEng recipient of the 2026 AMPEAK Best Paper Award for the peer-reviewed paper:

"Data to Decisions: An Integrated Maintenance Investment Model for Complex Infrastructure Networks."

Selected as the outstanding paper from the 2026 AMPEAK Conference, Lalinda’s work addresses one of the most important challenges facing asset-intensive organisations today: how to make better investment decisions across increasingly complex infrastructure networks.

The paper demonstrates how data-driven approaches can be used to connect maintenance investment decisions with asset performance, risk and long-term value outcomes, supporting more informed and transparent decision-making.

As infrastructure owners face growing expectations around service delivery, resilience and affordability, research such as this helps advance both the science and practice of asset management.

Identifying Asset Performance Indicators for the NSW Government

How do you measure performance across a $600+ billion public asset portfolio — and ensure it drives better investment decisions?

Josh Millner from Infrastructure NSW and Yahya Rased from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice explore how the NSW Government is refining its approach to asset performance indicators to better support budget prioritisation and strategic decision-making.

With the state’s asset base continuing to grow rapidly, the revised suite of indicators places stronger emphasis on how assets deliver service outcomes — providing clearer, more meaningful insights for government agencies operating in an increasingly complex environment. This work highlights the critical role of performance measurement in aligning asset management with broader government priorities.

A data-driven approach to optimising asset performance on a Road Asset Performance Contract

How can data science and AI transform the way we plan, maintain and optimise road assets?

Jim Mahood and Connor Murphy from Ventia explore how advanced analytics — including density-based clustering, machine learning, and emerging hot spotting techniques — are being applied to improve maintenance programs and enable deeper root cause analysis.

The paper also highlights the growing role of AI and computer vision in detecting defects and tracking deterioration over time, allowing organisations to refine inspection frequencies and Technical Maintenance Plans. Combined with performance dashboards and weighted defect scoring, these tools are enabling more informed, proactive and efficient decision-making.
