A data-driven approach to optimising asset performance on a Road Asset Performance Contract

How can data science and AI transform the way we plan, maintain and optimise road assets?

Jim Mahood and Connor Murphy from Ventia explore how advanced analytics โ€” including density-based clustering, machine learning, and emerging hot spotting techniques โ€” are being applied to improve maintenance programs and enable deeper root cause analysis.

The paper also highlights the growing role of AI and computer vision in detecting defects and tracking deterioration over time, allowing organisations to refine inspection frequencies and Technical Maintenance Plans. Combined with performance dashboards and weighted defect scoring, these tools are enabling more informed, proactive and efficient decision-making.
