Docklands is the biggest change this city has seen in the 21 years since our founding. And it's not finished yet. Just look how much has changed already!
Any guesses on the song choice?

Albert Park and Port Phillip Bay from Level 55 of the Rialto Tower on Collins Street. The Rialto Tower was the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere from 1986 to 1991 and was home to the Melbourne Observation Deck until 2009. In 2007 Eureka Skydeck opened at the Eureka Tower. The old Observation Deck opened as Vue de Monde and The Lui Bar in 2010.

These two photos were taken from the exact same window, 21 years apart. Hopefully there's still a view of the lake from here in another 21 years time!

The intersection of Clarendon and Whiteman Streets, former home of The Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. A change in safety regulations forced the beautiful W class trams (built in the late 1940s) off the rails in 2018. In order to comply with the new regulations, each tram would need to be stripped back to its frame and rebuilt, a lengthy and expensive process. Add to that a long waiting list for the modifications to commence meant their first tram wouldn't have been seen until late 2019 at best. In early 2020, the pandemic reached Australian shores which affected Melbourne tourism for two years. An unfortunate combination of events led to a sad, gaping hole in the Melbourne tourism industry and on our tram lines. We really miss spotting those stunning burgundy trams on our travels around this great city.

A view of the MCG from Grand Slam Oval at Melbourne Park. Two major changes here in the last 21 years. Firstly, in the foreground we now have Kia Arena, the newest of the tennis arenas at Melbourne Park, was opened in January 2022. At the MCG, it might look the same but the stand we see here was renamed in March 2022 from Great Southern Stand to the Shane Warne Stand to honour one of the greatest Victorian cricketers to ever grace the ground.

Lakeside Stadium in 2004 and in 2025. Today it is home to the Victorian Institute of Sport, as it has been since the 1990s. Lakeside Stadium is also the home of South Melbourne Soccer Club and is the spiritual home of the South Melbourne Swans, now known as the Sydney Swans.

John Cain Arena was renamed in honour of the former Victorian Premier who set aside the land now known as Melbourne Park. His vision was to bring the Australian Open closer to the heart of Melbourne, to give it room to grow and make it a world-class event that the whole world would want to attend. Mr Cain passed away in 2019 but not before he'd long seen his dream become a reality. Melbourne Multipurpose Arena officially became John Cain Arena in 2020. The arena opened in July 2000 as Vodaphone Arena (see 2nd photo). But from 2008-2018 it was known by another name. Comment below if you remember!

Rod Laver Arena opened in January 1988 as the National Tennis Centre at Melbourne Park. It was known by this name until 2000 when it was renamed in honour of one of Australia's greatest ever players. It was the world's first tennis venue with a retractable roof, which currently only takes 5 minutes to open or close. It looks considerably different than the 2004 photo, mostly due to the hospitality pod additions which were completed in 2022.

When Melbourne Sports Tours was founded in 2002, the Sportsmanship Statue was just 2 years old and lived on the north side of Olympic Boulevard/Swan Street. The redevelopment of Olympic Park and the new Rectangular Arena meant the statue could be moved to the more fitting location at Olympic Park, where it can be found today.

It's F1 Grand Prix week! Melbourne has hosted the Australian Grand Prix since 1996 and the circuit has been a component of our Sports Lovers tours since our foundation in 2004. Here's another 21 year comparison. Not much has changed in these pics except the trees and cars have gotten bigger and Eureka Tower is the only new skyscraper visible from this vantage point. Happy GP week Melbourne!
