African Drumming

African Drumming West African drums, art, drum and dance classes, tours and retreats. We believe in uniting cultures through the power of music.

We are dedicated to sharing the music and culture of West Africa in all that we do: through instrument making, workshops, study tours, and performances. We are the largest African music store in Australia and we love our drums! We are committed to giving back to our planet and ensuring our ventures are eco-friendly and sustainable, including the management of two Tree planting initiatives across G

hana and Indonesia. With an international network of drummers and dancers, our team includes performers and drum makers from around West Africa including Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Ghana, and homegrown Aussie talent too. The rhythm journey is a beautiful and often profound paradox, its depth knows no bounds. It has been our goal to take the drum to as many corners of the world as possible. Once it’s there, the vibration of the rhythm goes to work and magic happens.

Seth on 4 Kpanlogo drums at once… 🇬🇭

The coordination here is no joke. Layered rhythms that feel both complex and completely natural.
This kind of multi-drum playing is part of the richness of Ghanaian music — interlocking, rhythmic, and alive.
And somehow… he makes it look effortless.

There’s a quiet power in this… 🇲🇱

Tuareg men and women sharing the Takamba, a dance built on a graceful flow of subtle steps and gestures.
The grounding pulse of the calabash creates space, while the sintir weaves its melodies through it.

Stuck on the djembe? Try this to reset 🥁

Mike’s top tip: go back to the fundamentals and switch just one thing.
Play the rhythm with your opposite hand and feel what shifts.

Sometimes the breakthrough isn’t pushing harder… it’s coming at it differently.

Kpanlogo meets lolojan 🥁 (and on SALE)

Odai and Seth explore these two Ghanaian “brother drums,” unpacking what connects them — and what sets them apart in sound and style.

Both drums come from the Ga people of southern Ghana, traditionally carved from a single log and topped with goatskin, giving them a warm, resonant voice with sharp, cutting slaps.
