Travel Industry Staffing Shortages Persist ✈️ 🚗🏨

It wasn’t just the corporate travel segment that was impacted by staff leaving. Airlines, airports, hotels, car companies are all struggling to acquire staff. This has disrupted their service delivery as you may have noticed, with the most impacted areas being airports and security screening line ups.

Because of increased safety protocols and social distancing measures, you’ll want to arrive about 60 minutes earlier than non-COVID times. This is because many airports have enacted measures that cause the check in process to take longer than normal, like decreasing self check-in kiosks or counters for social distancing, temperature screenings, increased document checks, and new baggage handling procedures.and if it's a really important meeting or event then you need to give a day or two buffer.

If you have a really important meeting or event that you have to attend, then we would suggest having a travel buffer and leaving a day earlier.

Introducing Danielle Hazell

This month we'd like to introduce you to our new Assistant Team Leader, Danielle Hazell, who is finding ways to improve our client’s experience, which includes coming up with new service offerings in corporate travel industry (watch this space!) through to perfecting our offline booking process.

🎤 What do you love most about your job?
💬 I love that InTravel Group is a company which offers its team chances to think outside the box and really grow and develop. My time here has made me a better travel professional and shown me I have much to offer this important industry.

🎤 What do you love about working in the travel industry?
💬 Travel has been my passion for many years, since I was in high school and planned my first 6 week vacation. Since then my love for travel has only grown, and I have hit the sweet spot with corporate due to the fast paced and exciting nature of the industry.

🎤 What are you happiest doing when you're not working?
💬 I am typically out and about with my husband, and spend many weekends going on smaller Sydney day trips which we just love. To be honest, you could go on road trips from Sydney every weekend for years and you’ll still find new places to discover. We love exploring the Hunter Valley and Blue Mountains in particular. I also have two cats, Jude and Ruby, who I adore very much!

🎤 Do you have any skills or talents that people don't know about?
💬 Believe it or not, I am a mini train driver in my free time and have a license to drive Gallifrey. It’s a locomotive which I built myself under the guidance of my friends from the North Western Model Engineers. You can sometimes spot me driving at their site located at Nurragingy Reserve.

🎤 What are some causes you care about?
💬 I am a big supporter of the RSPCA and any animal based charities, and also have worked with the salvation Army a bit on their door-knock appeal.

The pandemic has changed the travel industry in ways we never thought possible. This caused these companies to quickly offload large portions of their fleet. In turn, once travel started to pick back up, they were woefully underprepared for a surge in new bookings. This has had some terrible repercussions for business and leisure travellers.

How many times have you had your flight cancelled or changed recently? ✈️ 😫

Unfortunately, airport delays and flight cancellations across the country show no sign of stopping as the on-time performance (OTP) of Australia’s domestic carriers has reached an all time low. The average on-time departure performance for Jetstar, Qantas, QantasLink, Rex, Virgin Australia was just 61.9% in June. Interestingly, cancellations were highest on the Sydney-Melbourne route for the month*.

With critical staff shortages, COVID-19 and extreme weather conditions to blame, we now need to be flexible with our travel plans. This industry is doing it tough at the moment and we certainly could use more patience knowing that everyone is doing as best they can.❤

The humble travel agent is becoming more of a necessity in these turbulent times, which isn't going away anytime soon. They can help navigate any issues and can make changes far more quickly than if you tried to call the airlines yourself.

Here’s some great travel news from our Indigenous community…

Djarindjin (Lombadina) Airport is Western Australia’s first Aboriginal-owned airport. Located 200km north of Broome in the Kimberly region, Djarindijjin has a 100% indigenous team, made up of about 20 local Bardi people from Djarindjin and surrounding communities. ✈️

In 2010, the Djarindjin Aboriginal Corporation entered a partnership with Broome International Airport to provide refuelling services to helicopters. An upgrade to the airport was required, with the Aboriginal Corporation borrowing $6 million to undertake the works; which was repaid in just six years.

The upgraded airport is now used by the Royal Flying Doctor Service to transport sick and injured people living in the remote area to hospitals and other medical facilities. 🏥

With the loan paid off so quickly, the income from the airport is now invested into other businesses and social initiatives in the community. ❤️

How Hotels Are Adapting and Innovating During COVID-19? 🏨

There’s no doubt that COVID hit tourism businesses hard, but it’s nice to see several innovations coming out of what has been an extremely difficult period. The workcation combined with day-stays has probably been one of the most useful innovations to come out of the industry.💡

With so many people working from home, the industry has capitalised on this, offering day-stays for those looking for a quiet place to work or holding conference calls or workcations for those looking to escape the routine of working from home and work from a hotel room instead. 💻

While day stays are nothing new, hoteliers have offered these rooms at a lower price than overnight stays, which has increased the numbers taking up the offer. The workcation, while also nothing new, has been stepped up a notch by hotels. The Rosewood Hotel in London is just one example, with hotel rooms set up with a workstation, and a butler service handing work tasks such as scanning and printing, as well as organising tutoring or babysitting for children.

It is innovations like these that have helped keep the wheels turning with hospitality and tourism venues across the world.

Traveller Tips for Flight Changes and Cancellations
When’s the best time to call your airline? ⏰

Getting through to the major airlines in Qantas and Virgin Australia can be difficult at the best of times, but at the height of COVID with cancellations happening everywhere, flyers are finding the process of cancelling and changing flights taking more time than normal.

Choice took to the phones in August 2021 with a nine-day test of call wait times, calling four times a day, to find out the average wait time across the day. They found the average wait time for Qantas was 39 minutes and 37 seconds (with more than 50-minute wait time if you call after midday), while Virgin fared a lot better with an average of 7 minutes 2 seconds. ✅

THE RESULTS: the earlier in the morning you call, the better your chance of not waiting on hold for too long.

For Qantas, wait times dropped on Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday, with 9 am or before being the best time to call. For Virgin Australia, Monday is the worst day to call, while the rest of the week is relatively quick.

Choice is calling for minimum customer service industry standards to help improve the experience of customers waiting on the phones.

Covid Update: The Queensland borders have officially come down

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced that all Queensland border requirements have now been scrapped as of 15 January as the state heads towards 90% full vaccination. This means that anyone coming domestically across into Queensland, either by road or by air, do not have to show that they have had their border pass, and they don’t have to show that they have had a rapid antigen test. ✅
