Did you know the “C Section” of Pentridge was once called “candle-light alley”? It housed up to 360 inmates (including Ned Kelly) across six double-storey ranges around central yards.

Cells measured just 9 ft by 4 ft 10 in, with no sewage, minimal ventilation, and almost no natural light. Hardened criminals faced life in these cells with no bed or toilet, relying on a night bucket, with only small vents near the roof bringing in any natural light.

Despite the harsh conditions, it was considered a “reward” section compared to B Division, allowing limited interaction between inmates. By the 1970s, it had fallen into disrepair and was demolished between 1974–77, closing a dark chapter of Pentridge’s history.

Ever wondered where Industry Lane at Pentridge got its name? After the 1870 Stawell Royal Commission exposed harsh prison conditions, sweeping reforms reshaped life behind the bluestone walls.

At Pentridge, this led to the creation of “The Industries”, a purpose-built work complex designed to reform prisoners through labour and skill-building.

Within this industrial hub, inmates worked in a timber yard, spun wool in a functioning mill, and trained as carpenters, blacksmiths, tailors and bootmakers, all trades intended to instill discipline and provide skills for life beyond prison.

Historic images from 1867 offer a rare glimpse into this system, capturing prisoners spinning woollen yarn and working in the tailor’s shop and revealing the origin behind Industry Lane’s name today.

Did you know in Pentridge Prison’s D Division, daily routines were strictly structured? After meals, tables were removed to allow access to individual cells. Dinner was typically served around 4:30pm, after which prisoners were locked in their cells until the following morning.
