WPM Lawyers is proud to have sponsored the New Tasmanian Award at this year's Rotary Club of Hobart Art Show, and we warmly congratulate Anurag Dixit (A.D. Art) on receiving this year's award.

Anurag's winning piece, "The Backyard," found a new home on opening night — and we're delighted to share that its new home is with us. WPM Lawyers has purchased the artwork, and it will soon have pride of place in our office. As a migration law firm, we were especially moved by Anurag's words of thanks to Tasmania for giving his art "a place to belong." That sense of belonging is exactly why WPM Lawyers created the New Tasmanian Award — to celebrate artists from migrant and refugee backgrounds who now call Tasmania home, and the unique stories and perspectives they bring to our community.

Congratulations again, Anurag, and thank you to the Rotary Club of Hobart for another wonderful Art Show.

Parent Visa Update: Online Lodgement Goes Live 22 April 2026

A significant change is coming for families hoping to reunite in Australia.

From 22 April 2026, the Department of Home Affairs will require permanent Parent visa applications to be lodged online via ImmiAccount. Paper applications will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances, such as confirmed technical failures with the platform.

The four subclasses affected are: 103, 143, 804 and 864.
What key benefits are there for applicants?

✅ Immediate confirmation of lodgement
✅ Simpler document uploads and case tracking
✅ Improved communication with the Department

If you or a family member are currently preparing a paper application, it may be worth pausing and waiting for the online portal to go live so you start the process in the most streamlined way possible.

Parent visas remain one of the most complex and queue-sensitive areas of Australian migration law. Getting your application right at lodgement matters enormously.

At WPM Lawyers, our team has always provided advice and assistance to our clients on parent visa strategy and lodgement. This is a long overdue, and welcomed update.

If you’d like to understand your options ahead of this change, we’d welcome a conversation.

Congratulations to our very own Kim Heap!

We are incredibly proud to announce that our very own Kim Heap, Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law, has been recognised in the Best Lawyers™ list for Immigration Law in Tasmania.

Kim was the only solicitor in Tasmania to receive this honour for Immigration Law, with our esteemed Barrister colleague Nicholas Poynder also receiving this recognition.

This achievement is a true reflection of Kim's dedication, expertise, and the exceptional care she brings to every client she works with. Immigration law is a complex and deeply personal area of practice, and Kim's commitment to achieving the best outcomes for her clients is second to none.

Please join us in congratulating Kim on this well-deserved recognition! 👏

You Chose Each Other. Now Choose the Right Lawyer.

Partner visas are among the most personal, complex, and emotionally charged applications in the immigration system. One missing document, one poorly worded response, one overlooked requirement - and the process can stretch into years of waiting. Or worse, end in refusal. That's not a risk worth taking.

What Makes Partner Visas So Tricky?

The Australian partner visa process is a two-stage journey - a temporary visa first, then permanent residency. This process can take anywhere from a few months to a few years. Along the way, you'll need to prove the authenticity of your relationship across four key areas:
• Financial - shared accounts, joint assets, combined expenses
• Social - how the world sees you as a couple
• Household - living arrangements and shared responsibilities
• Commitment - the depth and future of your relationship

Immigration officers are trained to spot the gaps.
