The redevelopment of 500 Bourke Street preserves an iconic part of Melbourne's CBD. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, the 47,000sqm tower has been carefully refurbished, restoring its existing structure and redesigning its interior with a strong emphasis on visual, social, and environmental connection.

Buckford Illumination Group supplied luminaires across the ground floor lobby and the upper-level fitout, supporting the transformation of the tower into a sustainable workplace of the future. ERCO's efficient and economical Iku downlight in a custom Kelvin Lighting can is discretely integrated throughout the timber ceiling, delivering quality illumination while ensuring the waffle detailing remains a defining feature.

At the heart of the lobby, a travertine-clad core behind the reception desk is softly illuminated by Coolon's Max Mini. This compact linear floodlight grazes the natural stone, enhancing its texture and emphasising the dramatic architecture, ensuring the wall continues to serve as the focal point of the space.

Buckford is proud to have been involved in this project's refurbishment, providing an efficient, human-centric lighting solution that contributed to the building’s 6-Star Green Star Design rating and Platinum WELL certification. The restoration of the existing structure, led by a strong sustainability focus, sets a new benchmark for adaptive reuse in Melbourne’s CBD.

The Dja Dja Wurrung Corporate and Community Centre, named 'Larnangurrak', meaning Our Place, is a space for Djaara (Dja Dja Wurrung People) to strengthen, and share culture. Buckford Illumination Group is proud to have supplied a lighting solution for this significant project, contributing to its cultural heritage and placemaking.

Inspired by the unique characteristics of Djandak (Dja Dja Wurrung Country), the building’s exterior resembles caves and rock formations. ERCO Site in-ground luminaires and Lightscan projectors illuminate the façade, highlighting these forms while providing safe wayfinding. Additionally, WE-EF FLC projectors light the surrounding pathways and open areas, ensuring safe movement toward the entrance.

The centre features a range of workspaces and meeting rooms to support Djaara’s corporate functions. ERCO Jilly downlights and track have been installed above the workstations, seamlessly blending with the timber roof pavilion and steel Y-columns. This structure draws inspiration from the Djaara's ideology of Bunjil, signifying connection to nature and respect for the land. The track lighting provides effective illumination while maintaining clear visibility of this architectural feature and its symbolism.

The lighting solution supports the cultural heritage embedded within the design and reinforces the Centre’s purpose to serve as a place of learning, while honouring the survival, growth, and culture of the Dja Dja Wurrung People.

Buckford Illumination Group is proud to have supplied a PROLICHT lighting solution for LCI Consultant's new Melbourne office.

A key feature of the office is a commissioned artwork by Ngarrindjeri artist Emma Stenhouse, which inspired the design by Concept Black. This influence is evident throughout the arrival area—an open-plan reception, kitchen, and collaboration space. A combination of elements, including the lighting, creates a strong visual connection to the artwork, emphasising LCI’s values of integrity, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

PROLICHT’s luminaires harmonise with Emma’s artwork and the boardroom mural, honouring LCI’s ongoing connection with her. Our team was hands-on during the final installation and commissioning phase, ensuring the lighting not only supports the cultural significance and fulfils LCI’s design brief but also delivers a functional and inspiring solution for the team.

The Senior Learning Centre at Crest Education aims to maximise education by fostering enhanced learning opportunities and promoting student agency. Crest Education’s commitment to student development is highlighted throughout the new centre, including its outdoor learning areas.

The fluid transition between indoor and outdoor spaces further supports students' evolving needs. Buckford Illumination Group supplied an exterior lighting solution that seamlessly connects the differing environments. Here, BIG Essentials Neon Neo delivers a continuous ribbon of light across the seating area, adapting to both indoor and outdoor conditions.

Additionally, ERCO Castor bollards illuminate pathway and open-areas, ensuring safe navigation for students entering and exiting the building. Coolon's Multo IP strip is integrated into the canopy above pathways, offering decorative yet functional lighting. While WE-EF LIGHTING ETC330-FS in-ground luminaires provide wall and column washing to highlight architectural features and further support wayfinding.

The lighting scheme attracts students into the space, creating a university style learning environment while also improving safety, especially during the winter months.
