The Merredin Railway station opened in 1895 and with the availability of fresh water from the Railway dam made Merredin an essential stopping point for trains on their way to Kalgoorlie. After the locomotive depot was moved from Southern Cross to Merredin in 1904 it cemented its status as a major rail centre. By 1913, four major railway lines converged on the town.

A massive signal box with 95 switching levers was built in 1913 to manage the heavy traffic and can still be seen today. A new station was built across from the original site in the late 1960s to handle the new standard gauge eastern railway. The Merredin Railway Museum officially opened on April 1, 1978 and a great spot to wander and view railway memorabilia and even trains on display.
