While the students were busy learning about citrus production, one local farm team member was enjoying all the attention.

Recently, Agricultural Tours Riverina hosted a group of secondary students from Western and South Western Sydney on a visit to the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Their tour included a visit to a citrus farm near Leeton, where they met the growers and saw first-hand how modern packing sheds use computerised systems to assess quality and pack large volumes of fruit destined for domestic and international markets.

Students also learned about the expertise involved in growing different citrus varieties and the realities of managing water at the farm level.

Of course, one of the highlights of the day was meeting the farm dogs, who seemed more than happy to take a break from their duties and soak up some extra attention from their visitors.

Visitors to the irrigation districts of the NSW Riverina are often surprised by how incredibly flat the fields appear across the landscape.

That level surface is no accident. Large earthmoving machinery guided by satellite technology is used to carefully reshape paddocks so irrigation water can be managed with greater precision and efficiency.

Scoops pulled by powerful tractors collect soil from slightly elevated areas and redistribute it into lower sections of the field. After repeated passes, the result is a surface with almost no perceptible slope, allowing water to move evenly across the paddock before the next crop is sown.

It’s a fascinating example of the scale, planning and technology involved in modern irrigated agriculture.

From orchards to processing plants, it was a pleasure to host the Japanese Fruit & Vegetable Study Group as they explored farms and industry across Mildura and the surrounding region.

Agricultural tours like these create valuable opportunities to share knowledge, strengthen international connections, and showcase the innovation and quality of Australian horticulture across the Riverina and beyond.

Agricultural Tours Riverina recently arranged a short tour for a Sydney couple who had enjoyed breakfast oats for decades, yet had never seen how they are grown or processed.

During their visit, they met with a Leeton grower of organic oats and gained a deeper understanding of the journey from paddock to plate. The experience offered valuable insight into the farming practices behind a familiar everyday food.

The Riverina community of Narrandera is home to a highly skilled Aboriginal craftsman dedicated to collecting, preserving and creating a wide range of cultural artefacts.

Wiradjuri Elder Michael Lyons shares a deep knowledge of his culture through hands-on workshops, where visitors can see how traditional items such as boomerangs, coolamons and didgeridoos are made. The process involves shaping wood that has been soaked, hollowed, sanded, carved, polished and carefully painted.

Michael also offers visitors the opportunity to learn about traditional food sources, including witchetty grubs, snake and wattle seeds, providing insight into longstanding cultural practices and knowledge.

A recent tour brief presented a unique challenge: to introduce a group of 25 Japanese accountants working in rural areas to examples of high-tech agriculture. The aim was to support their understanding so they could better advise farmer clients considering a transition to labour-saving technologies.

During the tour, we visited an apple orchard utilising sophisticated pest monitoring and microclimate data. This enables the orchardist to anticipate and address potential pest infestations early, before they become a broader issue.

We also explored a remote sensing system designed to monitor conditions inside grain and product storage silos (pictured).

This technology provides high-quality data without the need for farmers to climb on top of, or enter, storage spaces. In doing so, it saves time and energy while also helping to preserve the quality of stored products.

Leeton Shire, in the Riverina region of New South Wales, is home to a diverse range of advanced agricultural processing facilities.

From fruit juice production and citrus packing through to rice milling, wineries, nut processing and livestock operations, the region plays a significant role in transforming raw produce into finished products. These industries reflect both the scale and capability of the Riverina’s food and fibre sector.

Pictured here, a visiting group from Sydney inspects Southern Cotton’s modern cotton gin during the off-season, when the facility is quieter and machinery can be viewed up close. Guided tours at this time allow for a detailed look at how the equipment functions and the processes involved.
