Salties vs Cane Toads… and the salties are winning! 🐊🥳
Cane toads have been an ecological disaster since they were introduced to Queensland in 1935, poisoning native predators across the country. Freshwater crocodiles in particular have been hit hard, with some populations declining by over 70%.
But it turns out their bigger, saltier cousins might be made of tougher stuff 😤
Our friend and fellow croc tour guide in Far North Queensland has been photographing juvenile saltwater crocodiles on the Daintree River eating cane toads with zero ill effects, and his observations have now been published in the journal Australian Zoologist. Five separate cases of young salties chowing down on toads and living to tell the tale, with David able to identify the same individual crocs afterwards by their scale patterns to confirm they’d survived.
Australia’s leading cane toad expert Professor Rick Shine put it best: “I think we’re discovering there are a lot more native species out there that are capable of dealing with toads than we originally thought.”
Nature really does find a way 🙏
