Slovenia may be compact, but it does not feel short on anything. Ljubljana has riverside cafés and an easy, walkable centre. Lake Bled brings the postcard views, while the Julian Alps make room for hiking, clear rivers and mountain air. Then there is the coast and the vineyards, all within a country you can explore without constantly packing and unpacking.

It can be brilliant for them, of course. But it also works for couples, groups of friends and anyone who would rather spend their holiday deciding between a beach walk and a cocktail - not splitting every bill.

That is the appeal of a cruise line built around destination immersion. Azamara’s smaller ships and longer stays are made for travellers who would rather have dinner ashore, see the city after dark and avoid turning every port into a race against the clock.

The difference is in the details. A late departure gives you room for a market browse that turns into lunch, a temple visit without the midday scramble, or a local dinner you did not have to order by 5pm.
