Northern Sumatra Mid Trip Report: Adventure! Exploration! Mi Goreng! Tropical fruit FEASTS! Laid-back vibes! Dense jungle! Orangutans!

The Infuse group from St Joseph's Nudgee College have reached Northern Sumatra, where Program Manager, community leader and conservation powerhouse Jaka has created a packed program in and around Bukit Lawang.

So far, the group have trekked through the jungle and seen EIGHT orangutans, endless monkeys, a couple of vipers and a lot of stunning wild rainforest.

They’ve explored limestone caves by torchlight and discovered the warmth of the local community, where a smile and “hello!” seems to arrive before you do.

At the local school, students participated in education enrichment before going head-to-head with the local kids in a soccer match (4–0 to Bukit Lawang). The soccer match is set up through a volunteer coaching organisation that creates community and opportunity through soccer, while using it as an avenue to teach the next generation about plastic.

“Eco bricks” were made with local powerhouse Nora, where we compacted half a kilo of soft plastic into each used disposable water bottle, which will then be used as bricks concreted into the walls of a toilet. She also taught some students how to crochet plastic waste into drink bottle holders!

All this and the trip is only halfway through!

Next up: a local market challenge, time at the Batu Kapal Conservation Project, hopefully some river swims and, of course, souvenir shopping.

Most importantly, students are beginning to connect the dots between people, conservation, community, local needs and the economy, while exploring the forces contributing to palm oil production, habitat loss and the different futures facing this incredible part of Sumatra.

Did you know our Reef and Rainforest Program is eligible for the The Australian Government’s $10 million Reef School Excursion Rebate Program? This rebate supports eligible students from Years 4–12 to take part in reef-based educational experiences.

Eligible schools can receive $20 - $400 per student, with overnight trips that include an approved reef experience and curriculum-linked learning potentially qualifying.

Two weeks to go!!

An update from The Rockhampton Grammar School in New Zealand!

Kia ora friends and whānau (family),

The first 6 days of our trip have been 6 days well spent! Starting with many students seeing snow for the first time as we flew into Queenstown, we finally arrived in Cromwell for the night.

The next morning, the cycle trail provided just a glimpse of the gorgeous scenery that Aotearoa has to offer. We then journeyed to Karitane, where we were welcomed onto Puketeraki Marae with a pōwhiri. It was here that we bonded as a group and began to learn about Māori culture and language.

Come Tuesday, we travelled to Ōtepoti (Dunedin) for the day, spotting coastal wildlife, visiting the steepest street in the world and experiencing local kapa haka. With many laughs shared, wakas sailed and knowledge exchanged, we thanked Brendan and Susie before carrying on to Te Anau on Wednesday.

Straight to the dock we went to start our cruise over to the glow worm limestone cave system, where we observed a different kind of starry night!

Today, we have been lucky enough to cruise Poipoitahi (Milford Sound), titled the 8th wonder of the world! With clear skies, a low chance of rain and snow overnight, Poipoitahi was showing off her beauty.

We’re all sitting sleepy on the bus, excited for the days ahead and feeling grateful for these experiences so far, especially with this weather! Yew!
