Today we celebrate 100 years of one of the world’s greatest storytellers and natural historians, David Attenborough 🎉🎂🦀
For decades, his voice has connected people to the natural world and inspired generations to care more deeply about our planet.
Do you know… David Attenborough has a special connection to the Mornington Peninsula?
In 2017, he narrated a BBC feature involving the endangered Weedy Sea Dragon, found in the waters around Flinders Pier and the Mornington Peninsula. His work helped shine an international spotlight on these remarkable creatures and the importance of protecting their fragile marine habitat. Closely related to seahorses, sea dragons use incredible camouflage to disappear amongst drifting seaweed and seagrass.
Also in 2017, the giant spider crab migration in Port Phillip Bay featured in the BBC’s Blue Planet II series narrated by Attenborough, introducing this incredible Victorian marine event to audiences around the world. Every winter, tens of thousands of spider crabs gather in huge numbers to moult their shells together in one of nature’s most fascinating spectacles.
At 100 years old, Sir David Attenborough continues to inspire wonder, curiosity and a greater appreciation for the incredible wildlife that exists right here in our own backyard.
Happy 100th birthday, Sir David 🎉
