Skippers Canyon Road

Skippers Road, built between 1883 and 1890, is one of New Zealand’s most dangerous roads and a remarkable nineteenth-century engineering feat. Initially constructed to improve access for Shotover River gold miners, it carved through rugged terrain. Despite minor widening over time, much of Skippers Road remains in its original form, making it likely the only nineteenth-century road still used without major upgrades.

Although gold mining waned, the road continued to serve farmers, bike riders and increasing numbers of tourists. Today, visitors flock to its dramatic canyons both for the scenic drive and adventurous activities, notably the legendary Skippers Canyon Jet - renowned as the best jetboat experience in the Queenstown area. Despite the loss of some historic features, Skippers Road endures as an iconic heritage route of outstanding significance.
