Day 10 – Sunday, 24 May 2026
Our final day of the tour and from Bendigo we were making our way back to Melbourne via Mount Macedon. Dave took us past Hanging Rock (famous for the 1975 movie Picnic at Hanging Rock) before taking us to the Memorial Cross. After Melbourne’s Shrine of Remembrance, the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross is considered the most significant war memorial in Victoria. Standing at 21 metres high the Cross commemorates all those who served in wars and conflicts. Next stop for us was at the Forest Glade Gardens. Forest Glade is a large privately owned garden that is acknowledged as one the most beautiful in Australia and is almost 100 years old The gardens are a mixture of landscaping styles which take inspiration from various cultures: English, Italian and Japanese to name a few. The gardens cover an area of fourteen acres (5.6 hectares). After leaving Mount Macedon we detoured into Sunbury for lunch before making our way to the airport for our flight back to Brisbane where our Pursers Coach was waiting to transfer us back to the South Burnett.

Day 9 – Saturday, 23 May 2026
Today we were spending the day exploring Bendigo. Following a relaxed morning and a late breakfast, Dave took us for a city orientation tour, which included a visit to the Poppet Head Lookout which overlooks the city. Following this stop, we made our way to the Golden Dragon Museum. This museum which is also known as the National Chinese Museum of Australia is a cultural institution that celebrates the Chinese heritage of the region. It is located in the historic Chinese precinct and is the first accredited museum in Victoria. The museum features a collection of over 30,000 objects, including processional regalia, carved furniture, and embroidered costumes. It also houses the world's longest imperial dragon, Dai Gum Loong and offers insights into the Chinese community's contributions to Bendigo's history and culture. Sticking with the Chinese theme, Dave took us to the Heritage histed Bendigo Joss House Temple. Opened in 1871, this Chinese place of worship is one of the few remaining buildings of its type in Australia. The main temple is dedicated to Guan-Di (Kwan Gong), the god of war and prosperity. The Chinese saw hi as a wide judge, guide, protector and provider of wealth and prosperity. After lunch we made our way to the Sandhurst Goal complex. Constructed in the early 1860s, the gaol was based on the Pentonville Prison model where the wings radiate from a central tower. Transformed in 2015 the space is now a state-of-the-art performance and event centre. This afternoon our travellers had the opportunity to do an underground mine tour at the Central Deborah Gold Mine and also to take a ride on the Vintage Talking Tram. For those who went undergound they donned a hard hat and descended 61 metres beneath the surface to walk in the footsteps of past miners. They experienced what conditions as a miner were really like during the harsh gold rush era. 929kg of gold was discovered at the Central Deborah Gold Mine during its time of operation. For our travellers who went on the Vintage Talking Tram they got to explore the city’s most iconic sights and landmarks as the tram meandered its way from one side of the city to the other. The trams are beautifully restored, providing a nostalgic ride with the charm of yesteryear.

Day 8 – Friday, 22 May 2026
As we departed Swan Hill we did a quick stop at the Giant Murray Cod. We then did the short drive to Lake Boga to the Flying Boat Museum – Home of the Catalina. Lake Boga was an integral part of allied defence during World War II, with a facility that helped to keep Australia safe – the No.1 Flying Boat Repair Depot. Following the Japanese attacks on Broome in 1942, resulting in the loss of 16 flying boats, the establishment of a safe haven for flying boats and amphibians was deemed essential to the Defence of Australia – a location that was south and inland were prerequisites. Lake Boga was chosen as it was an ideal stretch of water for the flying boats and amphibious aircraft because it was almost circular (offering unlimited choice of landing/take off direction) and free of obstructions. At its peak operations the depot was staffed by 39 officers, 802 airmen and 102 WAAAF’s. The depot closed in 1947. The Lions Club of Lake Boga has now restored a Catalina A24-30 as well as the original secret communication bunker as a commemoration to the service men and women who served at No. 1 Flying Boat Repair Depot. The museum holds more than 500 artefacts relating to Lake Boga's proud history associated with WWII, including the historic Catalina Flying Boat and a range of wartime treasures that have been preserved for future generations. Lake Boga also has an amazing painted silo depicting an airman and Catalina flying boat. Echuca was out next stop. We spent a little time exploring the old Wharf area before boarding the PS Canberra for a leisurely cruise where we had a sandwich box lunch. The PS Canberra is a 113 year old paddle steamer which is powered by a 1923 wood fired steam engine. Another silo art stop at Rochester - four amazing images. This afternoon we made out way to Bendigo where we are staying at the Quality Inn Lakeside. Several of our travellers took the opportunity to walk around the lake before dinner.

Day 7 - Thursday, 21 May 2026
Feeling a bit like Groundhog day, we departed Mildura once again. Travelling on the Stuart Highway, we passed many vineyards and orange orchards, as well as olives and almonds. A stop for a quick morning tea this morning at the town of Robinvale. Founded in the 1920s, Robinvale is named for George Robin Cuttle, a local who was killed in an air battle near Villers-Bretonneux in France during World War I. Villers-Bretonneux became a sister city to Robinvale in the mid-1980s. Just outside of Robinvale we stopped for another photo opportunity of the Murray River. This afternoon we arrived into Swan Hill where we visited the Pioneer Settlement. Established in 1966 (originally as the Swan Hill Folk Museum), it was the first museum village of its kind in Australia and was created through community efforts to preserve disappearing evidence of rural life. The Settlement is laid out like a historic township, with around 50–70 original and reconstructed buildings—including cottages, shops, a post office, and workshops—many relocated from across the region and restored with period furnishings to reflect authentic daily life. We also enjoyed a relaxing cruise along the Murray River on the historic PS Pyap a working paddlesteamer. Dinner tonight was at the Paragon Café, followed by the Heartbeat of the Murray Light and Laser show which tells the tale of the Murray River and its evolution from 30 million years ago to the modern-day. Our accommodation tonight was at the Quality Inn Swan Hill.

Day 6 – Wednesday, 2 May 2026
This morning, we were lucky enough that the Royal Exchange Hotel was happy to host all of our travellers to a continental breakfast in their elegant dining room. Due to not being able to travel to Mungo National Park we needed to make our way back from Broken Hill to Mildura. So another longer travelling day for us. Instead of travelling the Silver City Highway, today we decided to travel via Menindee and Pooncarie. Just before arriving into Menindee, we turned right and went into a location called Sunset Strip. From here we could see one of the Menindee Lakes. The lates are a series of shallow natural ephemeral lakes along the Darling River which have been developed into water storage. When they are full they hold three and a half times as much water as Sydney Harbour. Our group had time to have a wonder around the small community before we had a picnic lunch in the Burke and Wills Park. Thank you to Dave our driver for picking up our Subway platters earlier that morning. Menindee was also famous as the last stop of ill-fated explorers Burke and Wills and is the first town to be established on the Darling River. Next was a quick stop at Pooncarie. Pooncarie is a historic river port and is the closest town upstream to the Mungo National Park – closest we could get on this trip due to weather. Travelling back via Wentworth through some orange orchards we made our way back to the Mildura Golf Resort once again for our overnight accommodation before dinner in the Bistro.

Day 5 – Tuesday, 19 May 2026
Today we should have been heading off to Mungo National Park, however, the weather had other ideas. Due to road closures and National Park closures we have had to make some last minute changes. Another night in Broken Hill for the group. Following breakfast we made our way to the top of the Line of Lode. Mining has claimed more than 800 lives over the years in Broken Hill. The Line of Lode Miners Memorial which overlooks the city is a poignant monument to them all. The memorial which was opened in 2001 has the name of every miner who has lost their lives etched on glass panels within high rust-red steel walls. The youngest we could see was 12 years old and he died in 1890. Next stop was the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum (also known as the GeoCentre) which gives visitors an idea of the extensive mineral history of Broken Hill. The museum is home to an extensive collection of minerals found in the region, including multiple world-class specimens that are extremely rare. The dual centrepieces of the museums collection are a massive 42kg silver nugget and the “Silver Tree” once owned by Charles Rasp, the founder of BHP. No visit to Broken Hill would be complete without a visit to the Pro Hart Gallery. Known for his distinctive style, Pro Hart’s gallery displays paintings, drawings and sculptures which depict scenes of nature and rural life with a quirky, imaginative twist. This also includes six Rolls Ryce cars which he transformed into canvases. After lunch we made out way out to Silverton, which was the original mining settlement in the region founded in 1880, but is now better known as the location for the filming of Mad Max II. A visit to the iconic Silverton Pub was a must. From Silverton we took a drive out to the Mundi Mundi Lookout . The lookout offers one of the most iconic views of the region. They say you are standing at the edge of the world when you are overlooking the uninterrupted outback plains. Making our way back into Broken Hill, we got to our accommodations at the Old Willyama Motor Inn and the Royal Exchange Hotel. Dinner tonight was at the Demo Club.
