A dream of a week so far and we’re only 5 days in 🤯 Thank you to this wonderful group of people for flying across the international date line to spend the week with us frolicking in the ocean here 🐋

Our plane landed as the sun was setting, and we set off on the 2 hour ride through the saltwater lagoons to reach our home for the next while.

There was next to no moon, and not a single cloud in the sky. As the colour above us turned a deep blue and the starts started revealing themselves - stars in the water beneath us started to reveal themselves, too.

Bioluminescence lit the way for us the entire way home, so bright that in the glassiest patches of water, we watched as fish became illuminated in the darkness.

We were completely silent, asides from the occasional ‘wooooah’ or ‘look over here’ as we were surrounded by stars both under us and above us - nature was extra noisy.

It felt as if our nervous systems were sighing, relaxing more and more as we left the noise and the fastness of the world behind.

These islands have so much magic.

WELCOME TO THE CREW

We’re so excited to officially welcome Zac to the Salty Pilgrims crew as a freediving instructor, spearfishing guide, and trip leader!

Zac is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to spearfishing, and has just been chosen to represent Australia in Brazil later this year as a part of the Australian Spearfishing Team! 🇦🇺

‘I grew up spearfishing in North Queensland, where both my dad and grandad passed down their passion for the ocean. Spearfishing has always been a huge part of my life, the one constant that’s shaped who I am. Being underwater is where I feel most at peace, and it’s always felt like home.

In 2020, I completed my first freediving course, and it completely shifted my perspective. I realised that my love for spearfishing is just as much about the feeling I get underwater as it is about hunting fish to bring home.

That course opened my eyes to the importance of safety, technique, and understanding what’s really happening to our bodies on a dive. I went on to complete my Molchanovs Instructor certification in 2023, and now I get to share that knowledge with others.

Freediving has taught me how to manage stress, stay present, and connect more deeply with both myself and the ocean. I love being able to pass those lessons on — to help others discover what’s possible when you lean into the water and let it teach you.’

We can’t wait for you all to meet and share some epic memories and lessons in the water with Zac come this January in the Solomon Islands. 🌴

The dream Instructor Team for our Gili T Freediving & Spearing Retreat!!

Whether it be helping a student overcome limiting beliefs on the line, helping someone until equalisation is nailed, blowing 100 bubble rings so everyone gets a juicy IG photo, staying back after dives to yarn over a coffee to help talk through what was done well and where improvements could be made, buddying every single dive, throwing shakkas on the way up from epic dives, high fives, water splashing, enforcing PB cakes, we love it ALL.

Here’s a series of photos of our incredible instructor team doing their thing on our most recent Gili T Retreat, you guys are genuinely the greatest and make each and every freediver feel totally safe and capable to push the boundaries of what they believe they are capable of.
