Amazing research out of Griffith University!
New research has revealed just how much energy humpback whales burn during their annual migration between Antarctica and Colombia... and the numbers are astonishing.
Southern hemisphere humpbacks lose up to 11,000kg of blubber on their journey; roughly the weight of a city bus or two adult African elephants!
During this study, researchers from Griffith University used drones to track the body condition of 103 adult whales. This dramatic fat loss offers new insight into how much fuel whales need to complete their migration, and the incredible resilience of their physiology and metabolism.
To prepare, each whale must consume around 57,000kg of krill - showing just how critical the Antarctic feeding grounds are to their survival.
