Looking over Ribeira, it’s easy to see how the city grew around the Douro, with wine, trade and daily life all centred on the river.

Across in Vila Nova de Gaia, the port houses still stand as a reminder of what built this city, and they’re not just for looking at. Step inside and you’ll find cellars that have been ageing wine for generations, with tastings that are as much about story as they are about flavour.

What makes Porto so appealing is how close everything is. You can wander the old town on foot, stop for a long lunch by the water, cross the bridge for a tasting, and finish the day exactly where you started, watching the light settle over the rooftops.

It’s not somewhere you rush. Two or three nights here gives you time to take it in properly, and it fits beautifully into a wider Portugal itinerary.
