There are plenty of short walks to do whilst in Nelson if you’re not a long distance walker.

Two short walks you can do from Wrens on Glenelg are to the Isle of Bags or Simpsons Landing and back.

Another highly recommended one (2.8kms) is the Livingston Island walk, out at the Estuary, where you can secretly watch the amazing birdlife from the bird viewing platform.

There is an Audio walking tour of Livingston Island which you can download and listen to whilst you do the walk! It is fabulous!

Go to nelsoncoastcare.org to get the audio guide, or use the QR code at the information board at the start of the walk.

What better way to end a day of exploring, walking or fishing, than to treat yourself to a nice long soak in a luxurious deep spa bath.

Calm before the storm. On a morning walk around Nelson a couple of days ago, we spotted this lovely reflection on the still water of the Glenelg River.

The river has well and truly burst its banks since the mouth closed to the sea a few weeks ago.

It truly is a sight to see the river level high. The wait continues for the mouth to open, hopefully naturally, which keeps the river healthier for marine life.

There is A LOT of bird life around at the moment. It's just beautiful seeing and hearing them along the walking tracks.

We also have the fire pit ready to roll down at  now, which is great for warming up the fingers and toes after a day out exploring.

It’s time to start looking for Ghost Mushrooms around Nelson!

Ghost mushrooms (omphalotus nidiformis) are a fungi growing in clusters, usually at the base of trees.

They are bioluminescent (emit light) and feed off living tree tissue and rotting wood.

They are mostly found in Southern Australia, and we are delighted that you can find them here, especially along the river bank tracks!

Head out the back gate at Wrens on Glenelg to begin your search along the river.

Our Wrens on Glenelg guests at Easter just love experiencing the Donovan’s Easter Market on Easter Sunday.

The beautiful little hamlet of Donovans is just across the Glenelg River, about 7kms from Nelson, towards Mt Gambier.

Starting at 9.30am, this market has 60+ stall holders, horse and carriage rides, pop up Art gallery, children’s entertainment and lots of food and good coffee!

It’s only once a year, so don’t miss it!

Autumn brings the calmer weather and good conditions for getting that kayak or canoe out on the Glenelg River.

If you don’t have your own, Nelson Canoe Hire or Paestan Canoe Hire are great choices. The scenery from the kayak is stunning, with the boatsheds and landings, high escarpments, and fish to spot as you quietly paddle along.

There is easy water access at several points around Nelson.

Want to experience the beauty of the Glenelg River for yourself at Nelson? Then come stay with us at Wrens on Glenelg.

Our guests have been reporting great fishing at the moment down on the landing and along the Glenelg River.

Local fishing store, Spot On Fishing Mt Gambier has reported some thumper bream and perch caught in the river last week.

They are being caught on prawns, whitebait, pilchards and lures.

Mulloway have been caught from the bridge down to the mouth, however we should see them move up the river soon.

One of our guests caught a mulloway a few weeks ago!

The waters of the Glenelg River were still and glorious on Sunday.

The Nelson River Cruises boat was out, making its way up and over the South Australia border.

Skiers were gliding on top of the water from Simpsons Landing. Children were holding on for dear life to biscuits towed behind boats and squealing in delight.

Closer to the mouth, kayakers were exploring all along the river’s edge.

The iconic river landings and huts were full of friends, couples and families throwing a line in.

Stay with us at and enjoy the beauty of the river.

Them: “Please don’t bury your head in the sand about this.”
Me: …. 🦔

This echidna was spotted getting sand all over its face while digging for ants in Nelson yesterday.

Guests often see echidnas on the walking trails in Nelson.

The Great South West Walk follows the Glenelg River, which is just out the back gate of .

Echidnas are also often spotted out on the walking trails near the Estuary.

They’re one of our favourite native animals to see here in Nelson, along with with emus, kangaroos, wallabies and many rare bird species that are hard to find in other places.

Nelson is quiet enough for them to feel comfortable to come out and say hello.
