This weekend, CFA volunteers joined Bocara Cultural Walking tours on Gunditjmara Mirring (Country).

The group had the pleasure of having Levi Lovett, Gunditjmara knowledge holder on Weeryn (fire) and cultural heritage, join them on the tour.

A special thanks to the CFA volunteers who stayed in Nelson for a couple of nights and experienced this beautiful town.

Today, Judy hosted a group of 30 from Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owner Aboriginal Corporation for a professional development day.

The group started at the Nelson pub for coffee, then visited the Nelson Cemetery and a significant cultural site.

They then travelled on to the Nelson estuary with Mary Styles talking about Ramsar.

The group headed back to the Nelson pub for lunch with Nicola Bail talking about southern bent wing bats.

Overall it was a great day with lots of knowledge shared.

Children are welcome to come on tour with us. Judy adapts each tour to suit the interests of the group.

A dad recently joined Judy on tour with his children. They’d travelled down from Melbourne and headed out on Mirring (Country) along Bocara to learn about Gunditjmara history, bush foods and botanicals.

Judy adapted the stories she shared to keep the tour fun and interesting for the children.

There are many native birds coming to feed off the flowers, nuts and berries during the Big Dry along Bocara (the Glenelg River).

These include fairy wrens, eastern spinebills, New Holland honeyeaters, Gang Gang cockatoos, Jacky Winters and rufous bristle birds.

The flowering gum trees bring in sulphur-crested cockatoos, Australian King parrots and many types of rosellas to Mirring (Country).

The Big Dry is one of the six Gunditjmara seasons.

It was a pleasure to have Tom, Annette and their family join me on a tour on Friday. From the Mornington Peninsula, the family were staying in Portland for the school holidays.

They are currently on a journey to find their mob and their Country. Tom used to come down to Gunditjmara Country as a young boy with his father and he was hoping the information shared would prompt his memory. By coming on the tour, they wanted to find out about Gunditjmara which might help with their journey. A special tour.
