Today I have travellers heading off to Scandinavia to visit family with stopovers in Japan to break up the journey and do a spot of sightseeing! Originally these guys had been assuming they would fly with Finnair but pricing and timing didn't suit so by thinking outside the square a bit and using Japan Airlines we got much better pricing, times that were more suitable for the littlest members of the travelling party AND they get some bonus time in Japan, somewhere that they have never visited before!

DC is definitely a city with very distinct neighbourhoods, each with their own feel, architecture and sometimes cuisine too.
We had an afternoon to explore the quaint and oh so pretty Georgetown with beautifully restored brick and timber shops and houses, cobbled streets, unique boutiques and gift shops and loads of food and coffee options. We then rode the Potomac Water Taxi back into the city centre, getting to see several monuments and Ronald Reagan Airport from the water on the way (this would be a great one for plane spotters in particular, planes were taking off or landing every 30 seconds!)

You cannot go to Washington DC and not talk about museums - there are so many of them and so many of them are free!

17 Smithsonians are scattered around the city (with 11 on the National Mall) and this week I have been lucky enough to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture with the Air and Space Museum still to come tomorrow before I fly out.

On top of that we've also visited:
* The International Spy Museum, a phenomenal collection of spy and espionage related memorabilia including an Enigma machine, secret disguises and interviews with real life spies and a secret mission for all visitors to complete as they work their way through the museum
* The slightly bizarre and overstuffed O Museum in the Mansion, complete with secret doorways (but not for those that find hoarding or confined spaces triggering!)
* The People's House, an immersive interactive museum run by the White House Historical Association, telling the story of the Executive Mansion, its inhabitants over the years and the staff who keep it running
*The Go Go Museum, celebrating the official music of DC and outlining its unique history

Love the sound of some or all of these amazing museums? Contact me today for more info: [email protected]

Train travel in the North Eastern part of the US is the easiest and most comfortable way to get between the major cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington. The seats are super comfy, there are luggage racks at the end of each carriage and plenty of space above your seat too, there's a dining car onboard and staff regularly clean the toilets in each carriage and come around collecting rubbish. Oh and there's the added bonus of getting to see stunning train stations like Penn in New York and Union in Washington which were built in the early 1900s at a time when they were considered "gateways to the city" and designed to wow visitors!

Washington monuments by day and by night...
It's been an amazing first couple of days here in Washington DC, meeting some of the friendly faces at Destination DC and like all visitors, enjoying exploring all the monuments along the Mall.
But each monument is completely different at night and features you don't even notice by day come alive once lit up after dark, so when you visit Washington you definitely need enough time to see them all twice.

And I've saved the best for last - my favourite part of my whirlwind 60 hours in New York was definitely The High Line, a gorgeous public park built on about 2kms of old disused rail lines floating above the city. The rail lines that once carried meat to the Meatpacking District, freight to the warehouses and factories on the West Side of the city and mail for the US Postal Service are incorporated into the park too and form part of the flower beds and seating scattered along the way. New York crowds and traffic can be a lot, so to have this stunning little oasis running from 14th through to 31st Sts, still well within the city yet somehow removed from the hustle and bustle is such a gift. The park is open during daylight hours, is wheelchair accessible, completely free of charge and often host tours and public activities (like the Zumba class taking place when I visited) - if you visit New York, you must put this on your bucket list!

Another day in New York another food tour, this time of the Lower East side, the traditional home of lots of amazing Jewish delis including the world famous Katz's, where the pastrami really was as good as Sally made out it was 😜
We also visited the famous Russ & Daughters to try the raspberry rugelach, Essex Market, Economy Candy, the Pickle Guy (where they pickle every fruit and vegetable you can imagine!), bagels and doughnuts...all the classics.
Then it was on to the 9/11 memorial museum, which was a very moving tribute to a day the world will never forget and all the people affected by it and finally another visit to Times Square, best seen at night in all its electricity consuming glory!

It’s nice to meet you

Hi, I'm Lani, your personal Travel Counsellor.

I live in Newcastle with my lovely family - hubby Ben, Bella aged 8, Harry aged 5 and our fur baby Banjo the labrador.

Travel is an amazing thing - it allows us to recharge our batteries, meet new people and learn new languages. It can take us out of our comfort zone, show us parts of the world we never knew existed and at the same time teach us new things about ourselves.
