|| SEE NHILL LAKE LIVING UP TO ITS NAME ON WINTER MORNINGS ||
Nhill was named after a traditional Wergaia word meaning “Place of the Spirits, signified by mist rising over the water”. The cool winter mornings offer the best chance to see this phenomenon creating a beautiful atmosphere of calm and stillness.

|| WIMMERA RIVER DISCOVERY TRAIL - HIGH RIVER LEVELS AT LOCHIEL ||

Section 1 of the Wimmera River Discovery Trail takes you from Dimboola to Lochiel. At times of high river levels or heavy local rain events, the underpass under the Western Highway at the Lochiel end of this section can be impassible.

The Wimmera River Levels are high today, 17 August 2026, meaning that the underpass cannot be safely crossed.
Remember to check local conditions, and if in doubt, it is recommended to begin your journey along the trail at Lochiel.

|| A VIEW OVER THE DESERT AT POMPONDEROO HILL ||
The lookout platform at Pomponderoo Hill, a short drive out of Dimboola, was a lucky survivor of the January 2025 bushfire. A short walk along a sandy track, suitable for the whole family, winds its way amongst the vegetated sand dunes leading to fantastic views across the Little Desert National Park towards Djuritte (Mt Arapiles) on the western horizon. A great place to gain an appreciation of the Little Desert without venturing too far off the beaten track.

|| A UNIQUE VIEWING OPORTUNITY AT RAINBOW SILO ART ||
As the opening access times of the Rainbow Silo Art viewing tower are currently 7:00am to 7:00pm, this the winter months with shorter days provide a unique opportunity to witness sunset and sunrise at the top of the viewing tower. Accessible via elevator or well-lit stairs, the sight of the early morning or late evening light across the surrounding Mallee landscape is not to be missed.

|| HINDMARSH BIRD OF THE MONTH - GALAH ||

Hindmarsh Shire is home to an incredible diversity of native birdlife, with its rivers, lakes, woodlands and wetlands attracting birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts from across Australia and beyond. From the Wimmera River and Lake Hindmarsh to the Little Desert National Park, the region provides important habitat for many unique and fascinating bird species, making it a popular destination for visitors eager to experience Victoria’s rich birdlife.

The Bird of the Month for August 2026 is the Galah.

There are not many naturally pink birds in the world. Flamingos are only pink because of their diet. Australia has at least eight bird species with pink bits, ranging from just their ears to almost their entire bodies. Despite this competition, our most iconic pink bird would have to be the Galah.

A small species of cockatoo, Galahs are found right across Australia. They can be raucous, mischievous, playful, and incredibly showy. A flock wheeling around in the late afternoon sun can dazzle with flashes of brilliant rosy pink. They nest in tree hollows, and are unique among cockatoos in that they line their nests with green sprigs of gum leaves. Look out for Galahs at some of our best birdwatching sites such as Lake Hindmarsh, Lake Albacutya and the Little Desert.

|| SUNRISE AT ALBACUTYA SILO ART ||
The east facing artwork on the Albacutya Silo rewards early risers as the colours explode in the morning glow. Thankfully during the shorter days through winter, catching the sunrise isn’t as daunting as later in the year! Just a short drive from accommodation at Rainbow or camping at Lake Albacutya, make the effort to witness this amazing display of colour and light.
