|| HINDMARSH BIRD OF THE MONTH - AUSTRALIAN BUSTARD ||

Hindmarsh Shire is home to an incredible diversity of native birdlife, with its rivers, lakes, woodlands and wetlands attracting birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts from across Australia and beyond. From the Wimmera River and Lake Hindmarsh to the Little Desert National Park, the region provides important habitat for many unique and fascinating bird species, making it a popular destination for visitors eager to experience Victoria’s rich birdlife.

The Bird of the Month for October 2026 is the Australian Bustard.

This majestic bird is found all across inland Australia, though is listed as threatened in Victoria. It is a seasonal visitor to our parts, and a lucky observer might see them strutting through open grassy and shrubby areas in the northern parts of the Hindmarsh Shire.

They forage on a wide range of things, from seeds and green shoots, to insects, frogs, lizards, and even mice. Bustards do have a particular liking for big insects such as grasshoppers.

With the looming potential for a locust plague in the Wimmera and Mallee, we might see more Australian Bustards around, eating their way across the shire!

Enjoy travelling on a heritage train from Horsham and Dimboola to Nhill, taking in the fantastic Wimmera sights along the way. Overlooking the stark boundary between the Big Desert and cleared agricultural land, walking up vegetated dunes of Hermans Hill is well worth the effort. On reaching the viewing platform, you are greeted with the expanse of the Big Desert and Wyperfeld National Park wilderness extending to the horizon. Look further across, where paddocks meet bush, to catch a glimpse of Lake Hindmarsh to the east.
