New wage rates for the Restaurant Award from the 1st November

🍳 🍱 Serving up new wage rates for restaurant and café workers

Under the Restaurant Award, wages increased 2.5% from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 November. Use our Pay Calculator to check your new rates: https://calculate.fairwork.gov.au/FindYourAward

💰 That means if you’re 20 years old and over, and a full-time or part-time level 2 employee, you now get paid $21.72. That goes up to $27.15 for casuals.

Remember, your rates depend on your classification level and you get higher rates when working nights, weekends, public holidays and overtime.

If you’re covered by a registered agreement, your pay rates can be different. Remember though, your base rate under the agreement can’t be less than the relevant award base rate.

The Restaurant Award isn’t the only one that increased on 1 November – it impacts 21 awards.

This is a positive devlopment which will make it easier to get the super details for employees who just can’t seem to remember them, or to provide them before super is due to be paid … 😁

Employers: From 1 November, you may have an extra step before you can pay super contributions on behalf of new employees.

Check if you need to request stapled super fund details from us if someone you hire doesn’t choose their own super fund.

Haven’t heard of a stapled super fund before? It’s an existing super account which is linked, or 'stapled', to an individual employee so that it follows them as they change jobs.

Employers: We recognise the impacts of COVID-19 on the Australian community at present.

If you need a little extra time to finalise your employees' Single Touch Payroll data, we’re giving you an extension. You now have until 31 July, but it’s best to finalise by 14 July if you can.

As an employer it is your responsibility to keep track of the award rates for your team. There are increases in some award rates coming up.

The Fair Work Commission has announced a 1.75% increase to minimum wages. This will apply to all award wages.

Increases to awards will start on 3 different dates for different groups of awards. Frontline and essential services get the increase from 1 July, 2020. Manufacturing and construction award wage rates will be increased from 1 November, 2020 and accommodation, food, retail, tourism, and aviation will be increased from 1 February, 2021.

For anyone not covered by an award or an agreement, the new national minimum wage (NMW) will be $753.80 per week or $19.84 per hour. The increase to the NMW applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2020.

We’re working on updating our pay tools with the new allowances and will send an email update to subscribers once they’re available.
