Throwback Thursday!
🏫 School is in session 🧑🏫
Northam High School c. 1921
Built in the early 1920s, the original school building is a striking symmetrical two storey structure that reflects the early ambition of education in regional Western Australia. Northam was among the first rural towns in the state to provide secondary education, laying the foundation for what would become Northam Senior High School as we know it today.
As the school community grew, so did the campus, with new wings added over time. Former students fondly recall stories of parts of the buildings being “dragged” from one location to another as the school evolved. The original hall has since been transformed into a theatre arts centre, while a modern hall and gymnasium were added in 1986. In 1996, further expansion included dedicated science and agriculture facilities, continuing the school’s long tradition of growth and innovation.
Many of the schools buildings are now heritage listed, and it continues to educate students as the oldest original high school in WA outside of the Perth metropolitan region!
